GOLF NO1 POLICE ASSAULT CHARGE

THE world's No1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was dramatically taken to jail and charged with assaulting a police officer outside the US PGA Championship early yesterday.

Video footage showed the American, 27, being led into a police car in handcuffs as he attempted to drive to the course in Louisville, Kentucky.

He was heard asking a nearby reporter: "Can you please help me?" at around 6am.

Following his arrest, he was taken to jail where he wore an orange jumpsuit and had a police mugshot taken.

Scheffler was later freed after being charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.

A witness said an officer appeared to be dragged by Scheffler's car.
