Scientists carried out an experiment that focused on nouns (words for things). Eighteen dogs were involved and their owners brought five objects their pets knew well. Items included slippers, frisbees and balls.
For the experiment, the owners said the name of an object before showing their dog either the object that matched the word or a different one. The dogs had special metal discs attached to their heads that were used to measure their brain activity.

After three years of training, a border collie called Chaser, in the US, learned the names of more than 1,000 items.
For 14 of the 18 dogs, brain activity was different when the object matched the word, compared to the activity observed if the word and object didn't match. This brain activity was similar to the brain activity humans display in the same type of situation. The scientists say the results offer evidence that animals can understand word meanings in the same way humans do.
