The name of the group - Elementaves - was inspired by the four ancient elements of earth, air, fire and water. This name was chosen because the group includes birds that are at home in the air, on land or water, as well as species with names connected to the Sun. The study also found a close relationship between passerines (songbirds and related birds) and parrots.
Researchers say modern birds emerged around 66 million years ago, around the same time as the extinction of the dinosaurs. This suggests that birds made use of the opportunities that became available when the dinosaurs were no longer around.
