Start with your age and then either subtract or add years depending on your answers. ‘For optimum health, we should aim for a number that’s equal to – or lower than – our actual age,’ says wellness coach Michelle Brewster.

Carrying excess pounds increases the risk of developing age-related diseases. These can range from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure, to arthritis. Note that being underweight can also lead to health problems. Check your body mass index (BMI) at nhs.uk and aim to maintain a healthy weight.
