While WRC was now being dominated by AWD cars, RWD cars were still popular at national rallies thanks to lower cost of entry, and Sierra dominated those, winning the British Rally Championship, Spanish Rally Championship and the French Rally Championship in 1987 and 1988, piloted by Jimmy McRae, Carlos Sainz and Didier Auriol respectively.&nbsp;</p>

Most were stolen for joyriding while some others as getaway vehicles as the police simply couldn&rsquo;t keep up with them. This caused the insurance premium to rise to more than the value of the car itself. While the Sierra&rsquo;s successor, the Escort RS Cosworth was way more successful in rallying thanks to AWD, no other road-derived racecar has managed to dominate so completely in both racing and rallying before or since.</p>
