Dinner by the lakeside, or sleep in a royal tent, or how about serene calm nature, or maybe a memory wall...or my favourite, tiny lobsters? What are we talking about? Wallpapers-which over the past few years have entered into a new realm of home design and décor that is ruled by personal choice and restricted only by your imagination. What's more, you can even have creations from some of the country's top designers (but we'll come to that in a bit).
Thanks to a variety of home improvement shows, magazines, and social media, wallpapers are taking centre stage in Indian homes and are no longer considered a western concept. While the wallpaper market is still pretty small, it is growing rapidly. According to a report titled 'Indian Wallpaper Market: Industry Trends, Share, Size, Growth, Opportunity and Forecast 2024-2032' by market research company IMARC Group, the Indian wallpaper market is expected to reach $783.3 million by 2032 from $166.1 million in 2023, at a CAGR of 18.81%.
"Primarily, the change [has been] the acceptability of using wallpaper. People have come to understand that it is not going to get ruined or [get] damp," says Raseel Gujral Ansal, Founder of New Delhi-based home décor brand Casa Pop, adding that the quality of wallpapers in India has improved and are now available across price points, making them more accessible.
