Runway shows have long been the heartbeat of the fashion industry. More than mere presentations of new collections, these events allow designers to express their creativity and innovation and respond to cultural shifts. Over the past few decades, iconic runways have revolutionised the industry via unforgettable moments that merge fashion, art, and some, even technology.
From Alexander McQueen’s technological marvels to Martin Margiela’s deconstructed rebellion, below are some of the top runway shows that have sparked conversations, challenged conventions and left a lasting impact on both the industry and its audience — until this day.
ALEXANDER MCQUEEN SPRING/SUMMER 1999
The S/S ’99 show by Alexander McQueen remains one of the most memorable moments in fashion history. Themed around the intersection of the human and machine, it explored the concept of technology’s influence on humanity. The dramatic presentation reached its climax when model Shalom Harlow, dressed in a pristine white gown, stood on a revolving platform while two robotic arms spray-painted her dress. This spectacle was a stunning visual and a commentary on the relationship between technology and fashion.
McQueen’s integration of technology and performance art into a fashion presentation was, at the time, groundbreaking. It opened up new possibilities for fashion shows, turning them into immersive experiences that could convey deeper messages and engage audiences in novel ways. This show set a precedent for using technology in fashion, paving the way for future innovations such as LED displays, digital prints and drones that are commonly incorporated into runway shows today. It was the perfect example that fashion could be a platform for exploring broader themes and issues beyond just clothing and accessories.
