SPACE boffins have built Mars... in Stevenage.
Airbus used rusty sand and rocks to recreate the surface of the Red Planet 140 million miles away on an industrial estate in the Hertfordshire town, to test its ExoMars rover.
In 2028 the craft will blast off on a mission to find signs of water and potentially life on the Red Planet.
Airbus, which employs 3,500 people in the space sector in the UK, also built the rover in Stevenage.
The company will shortly sign a contract with the European Space Agency to build thrusters for the landing module that the Russians had been due to supply before they invaded Ukraine two years ago. In the meantime, its performance will be honed in its specially-built British "Mars Yard".
