Sonya Grigoruk noticed the sympathetic look on the cashier's face as they made eye contact. She probably thinks I've been crying, Sonya sighed. For about five years, Sonya had been suffering with chronic red, irritated eyes. She had to stop wearing her contacts which she'd worn for more than 20 years without any problems because they exacerbated the symptoms.
Sonya thought her symptoms could be due to lack of sleep or allergies. But when she finally spoke to her optometrist, she was surprised to learn the cause was dry eye disease, a common condition that occurs when your tears can't provide adequate lubrication. Sometimes people just don't produce enough tears, or they produce poor-quality tears.
