India's national election
YOU South Africa|18 April 2024
SOUTH Africa isn't the only country holding an election this year - America and India, among others, are also heading to the polls. Most countries hold elections every five years, and it typically takes place one day before the votes are counted.

India's national election

In India, there are 1,4 billion people and 970 million of them are eligible to vote. This is why their election takes place over six weeks. This year's election is from 9 April to 1 June, with the results set to be announced on 4 June.

India also has numerous candidates. During the previous ballot in 2019, there were 8000 candidates representing 2 660 political parties. When heading to the polls, people cast votes for the president, vice president, members of parliament, and members of the council for each state in India.
