In this issue
In rural Bangladesh, solar energy is reliable, clean, and cheap. So viable an option has it grown to become that, especially in the coastal southwest, it is common to see tiny solar panels embedded even in humble thatch-roofed huts. This is mostly the work of Infrastructure Development Company Limited (Idcol), a government-backed Bangladeshi energy and infrastructure group. The keys to Idcol’s expansion across the country are financing plans that cater to lower-income people, as well as a solid partnership with the microfinance institution Grameen. The revolutionary service of microfinance is what makes finance accessible to low-income individuals; while it is often denied the attention it deserves, this edition of Court Uncourt sheds light on the workings of this vehicle towards self-sufficiency.
Microfinance is certainly an illustration of the age-old maxim: to unite the Earth, connect it. The need for the cultivation of cooperation well beyond country borders is reflected by treaties and arbitral mechanisms, and this edition has sought to magnify some of these relationships. Salient sketches of the Legal and Judicial Cooperation Agreement between the UAE and Egypt, and the Extradition Treaty of UAE with KSA, Kuwait, and Bahrain have been produced to this end.
