Feeding is one of the four basic and most primal instincts that humans are evolutionary adapted to have, follow and achieve. And this remains true today. The need to feed often defines our actions and motivations, so much so that the relatively modern saying “you are what you eat” was born. But in the case of our cover personality for this Taste Issue – my dear friend and favourite home cook - Yvonne Yuen, “you are what you cook” certainly rings truer. I’m always fascinated by her sophisticated interpretation of classical Shanghai cuisine, evidently the product of a deep emotional connection to her childhood memories. This is the kind of human-to-food connection we celebrate in this Taste Issue. Speaking of celebrations, I’m proud to be one of the first to announce the imminent arrival of Michelin-starred Indonesian-Dutch chef, Syrco Bakker, later this year to Indonesia with an all-new venture that will surely make waves. Other culinary personalities in the section include eccentric MasterChef Canada judge and world-renowned chef Alvin Leung and emerging cake artist and social media sensation Sonia Basil. Each of our personalities tells a unique story about their trade and how they managed to cook up a delicious career around their shared culinary passion. Our Dining column within the Boulevard section brings you the latest selections of happening dining places in and around the region. As a special treat for this issue, we present a round-up of leisurely weekend brunches for you to enjoy. The fashion section is always busy, exciting items to highlight this Spring/Summer, such as Tory Burch’s ready-to-wear collection, and Kate Spade New York’s novelty collection.
