The good news: The US has recognized Indonesia as a developed country, following the decision of the US Trade Representative Office (USTR) to revoke the special preferences for Indonesia and other developing countries in the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The bad news: The decision, issued last month, makes Indonesia no lon- ger eligible to receive Special Differential Treatment (SDT) from the WTO’s Agreement on Subsidies and Countervailing Measures. In plain terms, this allows the US to impose higher tariffs on Indonesia’s exports.
