With disruptive technologies changing the industry
dynamics across sectors, there is an overarching
concern about the impact it will have on job market.
Engineering as a discipline is not immune. In this Engineering
Special issue of BW Education,we spoke to directors
of some leading IITs and NITs, to understand how they are
guiding their students in this new context. And we got a range
of responses. From emphasising the need to stay true to core
engineering specialisations to stepping in to offer courses
in these technologies so that students don’t lose out, engineering
colleges are coming out with a gamut of solutions.

Preeti Aghalayam, Director-in-charge of
IIT Madras’ Zanzibar Campus, is a chemical
engineering expert, having been immersed
in sciences out of pure interest. At the
same time, she and her other family members,
equally immersed in sciences, are avid readers
and are well-versed in literature too. “Because I
am an engineer, it does not mean that right side
of my brain should close.” And exuding a very
fresh approach to subject and career choices,
Aghalayam says, “I am upset that there is a wall
between STEM and non-STEM. Each discipline is
served well by concepts of the other discipline.

B-schools do not run according to

syndrome of industry. We are an
education institution and do not always get led by
industry; we lead industry through our knowledge
and systems. I am not beholden to industry; I am
beholden to the currency of my thinking and the
industry will follow us,” Debashis Chatterjee, Director,
IIM Kozhikode had this to say when asked
by BW Education about changing expectations of
the industry from B-schools.
This was a brave statement to make when the
world of work is undergoing tremendous transformations
thanks to new disruptive technologies,
especially generative AI and the demands it
places on individuals in all domains.

The question is, how does one set that boundary, humans
can still be in control of the desired outcomes of
technology.
Implementation of the National Education Policy
2020 was another discussion point. While speakers and
the winners featured in this issue applaud it as a pathbreaking
moment, they caution that the success of the
policy will depend on execution on the ground. “There is
an expectation of change but execution of change has
not been clearly understood. The present system has
far and few educators who have the experience and understanding
about establishing criteria asked for in the
document. The shift from content-led education to a
skill-based education based on conceptual learning will
be colossal as teachers themselves find it impossible to
bifurcate between both.”
The realisation of the need to make education holistic
and to involve the head, heart and hands of the students
for their complete growth, is another important strand
in education today. One aspect of holistic education is
awareness and as a principal of a winning school said,
“Practice and awareness is far more important that accumulation
of knowledge. Education should help people
with their ability to reflect critically. Reflecting not just
on the content we are reading but the premise we have.”
These and other thought-provoking ideas in various
realms of education constitute the subject matter of
this issue.

It’s an exciting world of education today, with innovative
individuals, understanding the needs of students,
and backed by technological prowess, are offering
critical services to schools, colleges, and students individually.
Notions about educational startups have
changed and such entities are being embraced by the
education fraternity. This time, our cover interview features
two such individuals, Chaitanya Kalipatnapu and
Ashwin Damera, Co-Founders of Emeritus, who have impacted
over 3 lakh learners in 200 countries, through partnerships
with leading higher education institutes globally.
The world belongs to such brave individuals.
But does everyone get a level-playing field? Interactions
with women leaders in education featured in this issue
highlight some interesting facets of our society. Despite
being well-educated and highly qualified, they still face the
pressure of justifying their dream if they set out to carve a
unique path for themselves. Supplementing husband’s income
is still the accepted norm and so if a woman educator
feels she is up to it to step into the role of educational entrepreneur,
eyebrows are raised.

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) has
provided a brilliant blueprint to the country to
restructure education and several innovative
educators are leveraging this opportunity to
mould education and change teaching-learning
experience. Pointing out some of the
changes being ushered in, TG Sitharam, who has recently
taken over as Chairperson of the AICTE at this critical juncture
of NEP implementation, says in an interview to BW Education,
“In this NEP 2020, the school curriculum has been
modified to include financial literacy and artificial intelligence
(AI) as part of the roll-out of important NEP initiatives.
Given that the mother tongue or regional language
was given priority under the NEP, similar measures have
been taken, albeit on a trial basis, in a number of states.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education has introduced the
much-discussed Academic Bank of Credit, a concept that
would give college students several admission and exit alternatives.”

The NEP, along with Covid, gave opportunity to several
new-age education entities largely driven by edtech. The
challenge is to separate the wheat from the chaff. And the
Top Education Brands Awards is an effort of BW Education
in this direction. We seek to highlight some pathbreaking
initiatives in preschool, school, higher education and edtech
segments. The interviews of winners featured in this
issue demonstrate the innovative zeal and perseverance,
of educators who have started their ventures. They possess
the empathy, environment concern and understanding
of skills requirement of 21st Century India. It is heartening
to see the impact they are making in the student
community.

Schools reopened after a prolonged period of Lockdown
and uncertainty in early 2022 and education fraternity was
grappling with the learning losses of the last two years.
Still, the year was marked by a note of optimism, primarily
on account of the National Education Policy with its
wide-sweeping changes.
Usually, the educational fraternity is divided about the approach to
instruction – should it be disciplinarian or free of control; should instruction
be imparted in English or one’s own language; which narrative
of History is to be told, and so on. As many people, so many views.
But now, a consensus seems to be building around the NEP 2020. Its
emphasis on skills development, skilling being on par with academic
subjects, multidisciplinary approach, provision for accumulation of
credit points which can be then transferred, all these are welcome
moves, and the intent is right. There was optimism regarding these
changes in 2022.
The year 2023 onwards will decide the success of the policy, as the
execution on the ground, with eye for details will matter. In this issue,
we carry views of who-is-who of the education and skilling world
– NSDC Chairman Ved Mani Tiwari, IISER Thiruvananthapuram
Director JN Moorthy, IIT Roorkee and Hyderabad Chairman BVR
Mohan Reddy and Chairperson of IIIT Delhi Kiran Karnik - on how
