The cover story this week is on the Uttarakhand floods. When the monsoon hit the Himalayan state, it rained death and destruction, setting the stage for one of this century\'s biggest human and ecological tragedies in India. As refugees swarmed the valleys and politicians feasted on the disaster, the armed forces were the only ones who came to the rescue of the abandoned and the dying.
The issue has stories on rescue operations after the tragedy, the ecological effect and the politics over the disaster.
The story in the economy section, titled, Losing Currency, says that deep structural reform, not quick fixes, is needed for the rupee to be born again. Despite RBI interventions, the rupee has depreciated by almost 10 per cent against the dollar.
Four independent filmmakers and an actor share their views on invention, innovation and artistic inquiry in their field at the Round Table on Independent Cinema featured in this issue. The full video of their chat is available on the iPad edition.
The issue has a profile of cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, the Indian batsman who has emerged as a hero just when cricket needed one. The moustache-twirling batsman stepped into the spotlight in the third Test against Australia in March, slamming a brutal 187 on debut.
The July 8 issue has four free magazines – Aspire, Simply Bangalore, Simply Kolkata, Simply Punjabi - with it.
