This issue deals with archaeology and society and the ways in which communities can be involved and be engaged in the excavation and study process. As explained in the preface: "The challenges of genuinely participatory archaeology are considerable. Archaeology is a highly specialised craft, often conducted under the pressure of time in rescue archaeology, or with strict grant conditions to be met; it can be frustrating; and it requires patience and attention. In the past, the public were kept out, rather than welcomed in. Yet as we show in this edition, the rewards of engagement with communities and the wider public are great, and the outcomes important."

Forma Urbis, founded in 1995, has offered its readers a privileged access to some of the most interesting archaeological work ongoing in Italy. With special issues dedicated to the work of the foreign academies, to specific regions, or to publication of important conferences, it occupies an unusual space between popular magazines and serious academic work, combining the rigour of the latter with the production values of the former.
The English version of the magazine, Forma Urbis International, will provide a new and exciting gateway into the riches of Italian scholarship and archaeology, looking forward to occupy another important space, between the world of Italian scholarship and the didactic practices and opportunities in the English speaking world. Our quarterly issues will offer a direct way for students and teachers to access what is new and exciting in Italian archaeology, with special focuses on themes like women and open archaeology.
