Staantribune #53: Napels, Deportivo La Coruña, Johan Cruijff en Ajax, ballen in de bajes, Excelsior Rotterdam, Primera División 1980-1981, Mundialito, Feralpisalò, Olympiastadion, Theo Koomen, Prescot Cables FC en column Frank Heinen!

Het eerste nummer van alweer de tiende jaargang, dat vrijdag 2 februari verschijnt, heeft een wedstrijdfragment van Nederland – Brazilië, vijftig jaar geleden tijdens het WK in West-Duitsland, als cover. Onze nieuwe schrijver Michel Doodeman beschrijft in Staantribune #52 – op geheel eigen wijze – het snoeiharde duel tussen de twee internationale grootmachten.

Daarnaast tekende Michel voor nog twee verhalen. Een gaat over een verdwenen kunstwerk van voetbalclub Sant Andreu uit Barcelona. De andere gaat over de Serie A in 1999-2000, waarin de titelstrijd tussen Juventus en Lazio op de laatste speeldag op dramatische wijze werd beslist.

Ook hebben we reportages over het Belgische Sint-Truiden, dat in 2024 honderd jaar bestaat, mijnwerkersclub Erzgebirge Aue, een van de meest bijzondere voetbalclubs uit de voormalige DDR, en Racing Mechelen. Veel mooier dan De Racing ga je het niet vinden in de Benelux. Daarnaast kun je in Mechelen onze favoriete straat in West-Europa bezoeken.

Het magazine bevat zoals altijd schitterend beeldmateriaal van huisfotograaf Marco Magielse, die naast Mechelen ook De Oude Meerdijk van FC Emmen bezocht en de wedstrijd Crystal Palace – AFC Bournemouth. Onze nieuwe fotograaf Danny Last maakte een reportage over zijn fetisj: voetbalstadions en puddles.

Uiteraard mogen vaste rubrieken als De Supporter (over een fanatieke Nederlandse fan van de gevallen Ierse grootmacht Cork City) en Het Shirt (Denemarken 1984) en de columns van Groundhopper des Vaderlands Hans Douw, FC Dordrecht-supporter Elisa Kuster en Frank Heinen niet ontbreken in de tiende jaargang.

Oh ja, en dan hebben we ook nog eens een voorpublicatie uit het boek De Kist, over de legendarische trainer Simon Kistemaker, en een portret van Mateja Kežman, de voormalig aanvaller van PSV, die tegenwoordig geen interviews meer geeft en een totaal ander leven leidt.

Staantribune #50: Ruud Gullit, Argentinië, Galway United, Tottenham Hotspur, Dick van Burik (Hertha BSC), Sporting Charleroi v Standard, Mestalla, RCH, FC Den Bosch v Ajax, Willem van Hanegem en De Alkmaarderhout!

De verhalen in Staantribune gaan zelden over de sportieve prestaties van een club. Juist verhalen van clubs uit de ‘grijze onderkant van het betaald voetbal’, zoals Milo Lambers (supporter én clubwatcher) schrijft in zijn persoonlijke verhaal over Telstar, vinden wij leuk om te maken, omdat die nog niet zo bekend zijn. Daarom staat Staantribune #49 deels in het teken van Telstar, de club die in 1978 degradeerde naar de Eerste Divisie en daar nooit meer uitkwam, maar deze week wel mooi zijn zestigjarig bestaan viert.

Zo spraken we onder meer clubicoon Sander Oostrom over zijn misschien wel bekendste doelpunt in dienst van Telstar, blikken we terug op het legendarische seizoen 1991-1992, waarin De Witte Leeuwen op de drempel stonden van De Kuip, en belichten we een opmerkelijk incident in Het Oosterpark van FC Groningen. Ook Groundhopper des Vaderlands Hans Douw en FC Dordrecht-supporter Elisa Kuster spreken in hun columns lovend over de club uit Velsen.

Naast de verhalen over Telstar staat in deze Staantribune onder meer een nieuwe rubriek: De Groundhop. Hierin neemt Joris van de Wier je mee naar een wat onderbelichte club, die zeker de moeite waard is. In de eerste aflevering bezoekt hij de Racecourse Ground van Wrexham AFC.

Ook liefhebbers van de Bundesliga komen aan hun trekken. Meesterschrijver Frank Heinen belicht het zestigjarig bestaan van de Duitse voetbaldivisie en we bezochten voor de rubriek De Supporter met een Veendammer een wedstrijd van zijn nieuwe liefde SV Meppen.

Uiteraard bleven we ook in eigen land. Zo besteden we aandacht aan het 110-jarig bestaan (op 31 augustus) van PSV met een wel heel bijzonder verzameling. Eric de Jager schreef een artikel over Amsterdam 700, het jaarlijkse toernooi in de hoofdstad ter voorbereiding op het nieuwe voetbalseizoen.  En Rene Waning belicht weer een voetbalstad, ditmaal zelfs twee: Schiedam & Vlaardingen.

 Zo is het deze zomer exact een kwarteeuw geleden dat het Nederlands Elftal dichtbij de wereldtitel was op het WK in Frankrijk. Een memorabel toernooi, waarin Dennis Bergkamp zijn memorabele treffer maakte tegen Argentinië in de kwartfinale, wat de cover siert van Staantribune #48, die vrijdag 2 juni verschijnt.

Het is in 2023 ook dertig jaar geleden dat de eerste wedstrijden werden gespeeld in zowel de J League als de Premier League. Redacteur Eric de Jager interviewde Henny Meijer, die het eerste doelpunt maakte in de J League, en Roda JC-icoon Gène Hanssen over hun tijd in Japan. Joris van de Wier portretteerde Brian Deane, Dalian Atkinson en Éric Cantona, hoofdrolspelers in het eerste jaar van de Premier League. En dan was het ook nog eens dertig jaar geleden dat SC Heracles v VVV werd onderbroken en vervolgens gestaakt wegens een bijzonder feit…

Maar uiteraard besteden we, zoals altijd, ook aandacht aan het hier en nu. Zo waren we onlangs bij de beladen burenruzie tussen GVVV en DOVO in Veenendaal en bezocht onze huisfotograaf Marco Magielse onder meer het Stadion am Zoo van Wuppertaler SV, het Edelhart de Lillestadion van FC Sobemai en KSC Maccabi in Antwerpen.

Daarnaast interviewden we John Karelse over zijn tijd bij Newcastle United en hebben we een interessant stuk over de herkomst van Nederlandse clubliederen.

Vaste rubrieken als De Voetbalstad (ditmaal over Alkmaar en de Zaanstreek), De Supporter (Derry City), De Goal (Basile Boli van Olympique Marseille tegen AC Milan, Champions League-finale in 1993), Het Shirt (Argentinië 1958) en de columns van Frank Hein, Dordt-supporter Elisa Kuster en Groundhopper des Vaderlands Hans Douw mogen uiteraard niet ontbreken in deze wederom originele editie.

Onze huisfotograaf Marco Magielse en Joris van de Wier trokken tien dagen door Italië. 

Een paar dagen na verschijning van deze editie wordt op Het Kasteel de Rotterdamse derby tussen Sparta en Feyenoord gespeeld, een duel dat vooral in het westelijke deel van de havenstad nog leeft onder de supporters. Maar dat was vroeger wel anders, zo beschrijft Spartaan Anton Slotboom.

Ferry Reurink bezoekt tweewekelijks de thuiswedstrijden van Vitesse in GelreDome. Ferry vroeg zich hardop af of er intussen een ziel zit in ‘Het grootste theater van Nederland’.

Een wat minder fraai jubileum is er voor Veendam, dat een decennium geleden uit het betaald voetbal verdween. Redacteur Eric de Jager trok naar Oost-Groningen, waar hij merkte dat veel Veendammers na tien jaar nog altijd lijden aan fantoompijn.

Rick Hoogendorp maakte eind jaren negentig een opvallende overstap naar Real Club Celta de Vigo. Het werden bijzondere maanden voor de Hagenees. Redacteur Guus Hetterscheid sprak met de voormalig aanvaller over een onverwacht telefoontje, het advies van Martin Jol, speciale ontmoetingen met Edgar Davids en Patrick Kluivert, een Galicische derby met Roy Makaay en honderden knofloken én een Arjen Robben-momentje.

Op de cover van de eerste Staantribune van 2023 staat Diego Maradona in het schitterende shirt van Sevilla. De Argentijn speelde dertig seizoenen geleden slechts één jaartje in Spanje, waar hij in 1992 zijn comeback maakte na een dopingschorsing van vijftien maanden. Het was wel een memorabel seizoen, al zijn veel voetballiefhebbers het vergeten.

In deze editie ook het opmerkelijke verhaal over AFC (A Fan’s Club) Wimbledon. In Staantribune #46 lees je alles over de herrijzenis van Wimbledon.

Er was een tijd dat Amersfoort een eigen profclub had. Eerst speelde HVC in de Eerste Divisie en later SC Amersfoort, maar veertig seizoenen geleden kwam daar een einde aan. “In de laatste periode léék het niet eens meer op betaald voetbal”, aldus een oud-speler in het nieuwe magazine, waarin een artikel is gewijd aan de opkomst en ondergang van de club uit de Keistad.

De Derby is dit keer die tussen KV Kortrijk en SV Zulte Waregem, de Vlasico, in de nieuwe rubriek De Supporter staat een Nederlandse seizoenkaarthouder van Internazionale centraal en wat deed Johan Cruijff in het shirt van Helmond Sport?

Ook hebben we het debuut van Elisa Kuster (1973). Deze diehardsupporter van FC Dordrecht heeft ook een boek geschreven over haar favoriete club, dat binnenkort is te bestellen in onze webshop, en heeft vanaf 2023 een vaste column in Staantribune. Uiteraard mogen in deze editie ook de columns van de Groundhopper des Vaderlands Hans Douw en Frank Heinen niet ontbreken, net als De Voetbalstad, dit keer over Nijmegen.

Huisfotograaf Marco Magielse zorgde weer voor schitterende beelden, onder meer van de Adelaarshorst van Go Ahead Eagles en de Koninklijke HFC in Haarlem, net als de Britse topfotograaf Stuart Roy Clarke.

Staantribune nummer 45 staat geheel in het teken van voormalig Joegoslavië, dat in de jaren negentig uiteen viel.

Het magazine opent met een verhaal over Rode Ster Belgrado. De Serviërs wonnen in 1991, als enige Joegoslavische club in de historie, de Europa Cup I.

Voor veel Kroaten begint de onafhankelijkheidsoorlog op 13 mei 1990. Op die dag speelt Rode Ster Belgrado een uitwedstrijd tegen Dinamo Zagreb. Al vóór de wedstrijd breken rellen uit tussen de supportersgroepen van de twee teams, de Bad Blue Boys van Dinamo en een paar duizend meegereisde Delije, onder leiding van Željko Ražnatović, de latere oorlogsmisdadiger Arkan. 

Boban maakt, net als onder anderen Davor Šuker, Robert Prosinečki, Predrag Mijatović en Igor Štimac, deel uit van het Joegoslavische Elftal onder 20 jaar dat in 1987 wereldkampioen wordt.

In weer een ander artikel beschrijft Frank Heinen hoe diezelfde talentvolle selectie in 1994 wereldkampioen had kúnnen worden. Dat zegt ook Željko Petrović (56) in een interview met redacteur Guus Hetterscheid. Petro vertelt hoe zijn Joegoslavische vrienden tegenover elkaar kwamen te staan en over zijn jeugd in Montenegro.

Oorlogsmisdadiger Arkan komt ook terug in een artikel over FK Obilić, de club die in 1998 eenmaal kampioen werd van de Servische Super Liga, vóór Partizan Belgrado (16 titels) Rode Ster Belgrado (13). Een modern sprookje? Nee, allesbehalve dat. De titel werd namelijk gewonnen dankzij intimidatie en corruptie.

Redacteur Joris van de Wier was bij het Kantrida Stadion, een van bijzonderste voetbalplekken van Europa en in het magazine ook een artikel over de derby tussen FK Sarajevo en FK Željeznicar, Ook waren we in Split. Wil je de inwoners van deze stad écht leren kennen, ga dan naar het Poljudstadion. Hajduk Split is namelijk dé trots van de stad.
