Coping With the Holiday Season
‘Tis the season to be jolly and merry! But this holiday season can also be a source of various stressors that can have adverse consequences on our health – longer working hours, traffic jams, nightly parties, and last-minute Christmas shopping.
It’s also difficult to imagine holiday fun without drinking sprees and cholesterol-laden foods served on the table, but we should minimize or avoid them altogether.
In this issue of H&L, we focus on these various stressors that may trigger the so-called “Holiday Heart Syndrome” (HHS). We highlight the association between the ingestion of alcohol and onset of cardiac arrhythmias as this was noted in healthy people without heart disease known to cause arrhythmia.
There are ways to enjoy this season without sacrificing one’s health. If we have a known heart problem or have several risk factors, it is best to see one’s physician and get his or her advice on what precautions we should take. Better to be more careful than sorry so we can all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy New Year!
