In an age that is so digital, so much more competitive, where the latest news enters our eyes in fractions of an instant, all we want is to have the time and freedom to (re)dress our days. So many people want to tell us (or influence us) about what to wear, what to eat, where to go, that it becomes inevitable not to talk about freedom. Welcome to issue 80 of TRENDS. Where there are plenty of trends. And there have been so many conversations. From architecture to design, from fashion to engines. So many names and brands that are at the cutting edge of evolution, are showcased here. Through images, which convey the splendour of what’s new, and messages (as well as journeys), which serve as inspiration. Behind the looks, the prototypes, the product design, the creative work, stand bold and admirable beings. True success stories. An example of this is João Vieira, architect and founder of Studio JV, whose story is intertwined with countless projects and countries; Andreia Louraço, interior designer and founder of the studio bearing her name, who is convinced that “interior design projects really can change lives”; Frederico Albergaria, founder of Cobermaster, who goes beyond dreaming to making things happen, as demonstrated by his patented invention of three-dimensional grating, which makes him the only manufacturer of this type of product in the world; and Yiqing Yin, one of the youngest fashion designers, who is already part of the world of Haute Couture and is the face of Vacheron Constantin’s ‘One of not many’ campaign.

What is design? It is the coming together of an idea, a thought, with the purpose of creating something. But design goes beyond the aesthetic. It is a fact. That’s why big brands are increasingly turning to design to set their products apart. And does this help sales? Absolutely. We know that what first attracts us is what we see. Then, if we add functionality and comfort, the deal is done. As TRENDS is a magazine that oozes design, we have prepared a Product & Design special for this issue. We’ve brought together several brands that stand out in the market for the magnificent design stamped on their products, such as Haier, Velux, Vispring, Cobermaster, Suffa, Bicachair, among many others represented in the usual section: Product (Trendsetter). But in addition to the major brands, we’ve selected some striking faces with an excellent track record in design, such as José Carvalho Araújo, who started out as a product designer and is now one of the most illustrious figures on the national architecture scene; Ana Borges, an interior designer who designs and creates spaces with soul; Deanna Comellini, the designer and artistic director of G. T.DESIGN, for whom rugs are a way of life; fashion designer Nuno Gama, who presents new designs and new pieces with every collection; and... if you look at all the features in this issue, you’ll find design at every turn of the page. This is what design is. It’s everything we see and feel!

What do we mean by outdoor space in our lives, in our everyday lives? It is a beautiful, well-decorated, and welcoming place... or maybe more. Who wouldn’t want to spend a lot of their time in the tranquillity of their home’s outdoor area, in a space where comfort and beauty prevail? Being in contact with natural light, in the open air and with nature, which always brings us a certain peace. In actual fact, with the hectic pace of our everyday lives, our physical and mental health increasingly requires environments that make us relax and feel good. This is why we bring you some Outdoor Living concepts in this issue, with a wide selection of products and solutions for a truly unforgettable experience. The garden, the terrace, the patio, the pool, the decoration, as a whole, tend to bring us a sense of perfection and fulfilment. Soft lines, functionality, the technology connecting the outside to inside, the landscape... are what make outdoor spaces such unique and distinctive places. And opening up our horizons in this Outdoor special are some of the best names in the world, such as Mário Martins, architect; João Bicho, landscape architect; Nini Andrade Silva, interior designer; Aurora Carapinha, teacher and landscape architect; João Ceregeiro, architect and president of the Portuguese Association of Landscape Architects (APAP); and Patrícia Coelho, founder of Rondinart. 18 years in The Chef’s Kitchen

Light, design, comfort, furniture, high-end appliances and gastronomic recipes... these are all part of the list of essential ingredients needed to successfully make a good meal. But that’s not all. You need a good chef and... much more. In this issue marking the 18th anniversary of TRENDS, we bring you a The Chef’s Kitchen Special, featuring leading brands, such as Haier, Gaggenau, Gneisse, Fabri, among others, which go to make the kitchen a place of excellence. And, right here, we sit around the table with some of the biggest names in Portuguese gastronomy, including Rui Paula, José Avilez, Justa Nobre, Ricardo Costa and Henrique Sá Pessoa. 
2023 will be a year dedicated to your HOUSE, through the Indoors and Outdoors Special, which starts now, in this issue, with the Indoors Special, where we focus on the kitchen as the most important part of a house. But there’s a lot more to read about in the pages that follow. Green trends year
Green was the colour of choice for the summer 2022. And it was also our choice for this issue. TRENDS, which is full of green features, focusing on sustainability at various levels, from the fashion world to architecture, from products to engines, invites you to browse through its pages of inspiring articles. We can say that green is the colour we strive to use in all areas of our lives, in looks, in collections, in projects and in the message we want to convey to our readers. And green is also the colour we need after the controversial times the world has been going through, a pandemic, the war in Ukraine ... the planet does not deserve so much adversity and the environment needs, today more than ever, to be detoxified and breathe pure air. Green is heavy with symbolism, has a calming and natural effect. And what colour palette goes with green? All the hues with which we want to paint our days, because green harmonises with everything, and this can be proved through the various sustainable projects that we present, the interviews and opinions of international faces, who have much to teach us. Together and ‘greener’
Sustainability is the future. Much is being said about it these days. The fact is that the planet’s resources are beginning to run out and the need to adopt an ecological and healthy model has become a growing concern for human beings. As such, having a sustainable lifestyle is much more than consuming responsibly. In the projects we present in this issue of TRENDS we took care to select themes featuring ecology. We bring you a variety of architectural and interior design works where environmental responsibility is the guiding principle. We talk about fashion, passive houses; stability and comfort that can be achieved through greener strategies; brands that commit to 100% sustainable ranges; personalities that have carved out striking stories, such as architect Miguel Câncio Martins – with a remarkable national and international career -; acclaimed interior designer Joana and her daughter Marta Aranha; dynamic Paulo Mateus Pinto, CEO of La Redoute in Portugal; and star Marina Ruy Barbosa, actress, model and businesswoman, who created the brand Ginger, focused on respect for nature. All of them, through their projects, reveal a sincere concern for sustainability and social responsibility. An effort that is only possible if together, and with good ecological and conscious practices, we look to the future with poise and bear in mind that the planet deserves all our care and respect. The future has arrived in 2021 with the AirCar model – a flying car. We’ve moved on from science fiction into a reality that is rapidly transforming, innovating and moving ‘at the speed of light’. In this issue, we reveal to you the experimental journey of this new vehicle, and many other journeys, of people and brands travelling in their time and adapting to the present, but with an eye to the future. And always accompanied by memories of the past. Not least because the story of each one of these figures takes place back then, where everything began. Today, they are entrepreneurs, artists and creatives who take their journey very seriously. And they are passionate about what they do. An example of this is architect Miguel Saraiva, with hundreds of projects in Portugal and around the world; and also businessman Miguel Pires de Lima, from the furniture sector, who ventured out in 1997, when he launched Homes In Heaven, in London; and the innovation of Sérgio Neves, who continued his father’s business and, today, follows the trends of world architecture and heads JNF as a company producing fittings for furniture and construction, with ‘outside the box’ solutions; equally, Diogo Miranda also gives importance to the details of each piece he creates, always following fashion trends – a sector which is also evolving at breakneck speed. The future comes at us fast, so fast that we hardly notice time passing, and our aim is to record on each of our pages the best of world trends. Happy reading!

Heart and Soul 

When our soul becomes a reflection of the essence of things, we strive to create masterpieces in every project we develop. And it is this soul that we bring to this issue of TRENDS: Alma da Comporta  (Soul of Comporta), a fragrance perfumed by the aromas of the town of Comporta, created by Pierre Bouissou; the soul that captures the essence of architectural projects, with every click of the camera, through the watchful eye of Julien Lanoo, the man behind the World’s Best Photography Studio, in 2021, as recognised by the Architizer A+Firm Awards; the soul of duo Artur Miranda and Jacques Bec, from the Oito em Ponto design studio, which tells the story of the restoration of the Château Saint-Maur, in Saint Tropez, France; the soul full of pure creativity of Luisa Battaglia, the Artistic Director of SCAB Design, whenever she designs a new product; and an ecological soul, which is paving the way towards the total electrification of the brand in 2030 – Volvo, part of the Geely Group. And it is with our soul, packed full of wonderful features and news, that we share unique projects, set in standout landscapes; innovative architecture; cosy interior details; items and clothing that are true works of art and a motorised universe that will make you lose track of the speed of time. For it is with heart and soul that we work our brand TRENDS, Know The Difference. 

2020: a year like no other
To begin with, there was nothing to suggest the world was heading for year as different as the one we’ve been experiencing. 2020 was seen as a year full of joy, success and many investments. However, and because fate wanted it that way, the world did a 180º and everyone had to adapt to new rhythms of daily life. As such, the management model for fashion, trends, the motor industry, architecture, and everything that surrounds us, have been rethought and the world has not been, and cannot remain, indifferent to recent months. A lot has changed. So have we. But we have kept up the quality of our work and focus on bringing you, once again, an issue filled with pages packed with projects, people, objects and news that will give colour to your days. In TRENDS #72 lies the interaction between the self (we) and the other (you), because it is between people that the basic needs of life reside and therefore we share our knowledge, and that of our interviewees and opinion makers, with you, in every line. We shall leave the rest to the law of fate, but we shall experience the fantastic things that the world offers us together and enjoy the best of life. Happy reading!


We’ve researched distant trends, and surrounded ourselves with historical references. First and foremost, through the respected Bauhaus movement, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. It has no single trend, that’s for sure, but this movement was and remains one of the great sources of inspiration for many architects, product and fashion designers, and for many other forms of art. That’s why TRENDS no. 71 dedicates some of its pages to minds that have been inspired, in one way or another, by this century-old concept. We’ve given a voice to the works of architect Raulino Silva, recipient of several awards; to Teresa Pietra Torres and Madalena Sousa Cabral, the names behind Mint Interior Design; to Jennifer Brachmann, architect, but passionate about the world of fashion; to La Redoute, one of the leading names in fashion and home ware, and to many others. We attended the December 10, 2019 launch of the MINI Electric Cooper SE in Brooklyn, New York. And because stories are written in colour, in this issue we fill the pages with sparkling subjects. Wishing you all balance, contrast, rhythm and harmony, our hope is that 2020 will be a year of many projects, designs and trends in the lives of each of our readers. Sustainability and Trends
Summer has arrived, and with it the most incredible collections, trends in fashion, motors, design and architecture. In issue number 70, we wanted to pay special attention to the role of sustainability today. So we went out and asked: just what is sustainability all about? The concept has been around since the beginning of humanity and consists of a series of ecologically correct, economically viable, socially just and culturally diverse ideas, strategies and other measures aimed at preserving the planet, natural resources and the well-being of humanity. To make the future brighter and more civilised, fashion can be sustainable, engines can be sustainable and architecture too. That’s why, in this issue, we will introduce you to some ecological projects and some differing opinions on sustainability. We invite you to read the words of the architects Siza Vieira, Eduardo Souto de Moura, João de Sousa Rodolfo and others of renowned work and quality. Take your time to look at some exciting ecological and modern architecture projects, or join TRENDS on its visit to the Concurso de Eleganza Villa d’Este. Six months from now, we’ll get back to you.

The world spins, and every second, every moment, we spin with it. This is one of the absolute certainties that we have. It is also a certainty that, in sync with trends, we are always enriching one another. Everything has an influence. Everything is in sync. Fashion, for example, influences architecture when it strengthens the quest for what is different, what is new. And we all go around constantly looking closely at trends and behaviours. In every area we address in TRENDS, the word “sync” always goes hand in hand with the design, with the choice of materials, with the spaces and finishes, in sync with colours... Fashion, once again, harmonises with decoration, through vintage looks, bold at other times, with summer or winter colours... They always walk alongside design, decoration, what is different. At the same time, all other areas – architecture, interiors and motor vehicles – live in sync with each other. The universes converge and harmony is always there. Focusing on the best that history has given us seems to be the premise guiding many contemporary creative minds, who look to the past for inspiration. This is certainly the case of the Bisarro project, which revives the age-old art of Bisalhães black pottery; of the vintage-style motorcycles created by Ton-Up Garage; and of Freakloset, which reinterprets classic footwear models, customising them with bright colours and new materials. This is what architect João Mendes Ribeiro has done too, in a range of rehabilitation projects on historic buildings, expertly updating and restoring them.
On the following pages, past and present walk hand in hand alongside the surprises the future has in store for us. As António Gedeão once said, in the poem Pedra Filosofal [Philospher’s Stone], “let the dream rule life, whenever a man dreams let the world jump and advance”.
