In this issue, Asian Geographic magazine celebrates 20 years of publishing by

We visit the deeply spiritual kingdom of Bhutan and its red-robed monks, reveal the healing and energy-boosting power of Asia’s red fruits, and discover the central role chilli plays in the continent’s cuisine.

In “All That Glitters Is Gold”, on page 20, discover the significance of the precious yellow metal not just in the Sinic world but across Asia. Travel with us along “The Mighty Yellow” (page 72) and explore what makes China’s second largest river so unique. And in “Yellow in Peril” (page 62), learn why yellow seahorses (along with dozens of other Hippocampus species) are dying in terrifying numbers – and no, traditional Chinese medicine is not the real culprit.

It is often said that oceans are the “lungs of the Earth”. While 50 percent of all photosynthesis comes from terrestrial plants, the other half actually takes place in the oceans – thanks to phytoplankton and algae in the upper layer of the water. Moreover, the oceans sequester an immense amount of carbon dioxide, which would otherwise cause a catastrophic greenhouse effect. In fact, ocean habitats like seagrasses and mangroves can sequester carbon dioxide at rates up to four times higher than terrestrial forests can.....
Back on planet Earth, perhaps the last country in Asia you’d associate with water is the hot, dry, landlocked nation of Uzbekistan, where just a few inches of rain fall in a year. Yet, as we discover in “Uzbekistan: 50 Shades of Blue”, on page 6, in this Muslim majority country, it is not green, the colour most closely associated with Islam, that matters most, but blue.

In this special Green Edition of ASIAN Geographic, we continue our series of “colour editions” with a look at all things green in Asia.
These different shades of green matter a great deal to our region, and I hope this edition helps you to “think green” a little more – whether it’s using less water, considering your Muslim neighbours, or making your next vacation an ecotourism adventure.

In this issue we focus on our first four ASIAN Geographic Expeditions. In “The Silk Road Through Uzbekistan”, we return to a “road less travelled”. Our next port of call is one of Asia’s underrated gems, an island dwarfed by a gigantic neighbour that has somehow managed to maintain an identity all its own: Sri Lanka. This issue will bring us the various textiles of Asia. From the growing of silk and cotton to the weaving of fabric together, the issue will cover the styles and methods that the diverse Asian community have followed for aeons and how modern-day technology has boosted or sometimes hindered, the livelihood of these textile communities. While moving with the times is crucial, the issue will highlight the spurt of eco-fashion businesses that focus on green and sustainable methods to manufacture garments. While the issue mentions the production process, it is only right to the commendable designers and textile masters who have changed the game.

In this issue, we will take a look at the most anticipated event of 2022 – The FIFA World Cup. This international frenzy has taken the world by storm and Asia is no exception. This issue will cover the roots and history of football as well as how the Asian community have stood out among the best footballers in the world. Asians have also invested considerably in footballers and football clubs.

In the first issue, we delve into the major world religions. Covering Christianity, Budhhism, Islam, Hinduism and Sikhism, the issue follows the rise and falls of these religions as well as the practices and traditions that have stood the test of time. The influence religion has had on food, festivals and the overall lifestyle of a region is unmatched. Journey through the origins of these religions and gain a deeper understanding about the beliefs that inspire such deep devotion and faith in their followers. Furthermore, there will be an exploration on the divide that exists between and within religious communities and how it has steered away from the
initial path.

Asian Geographic takes a deep dive into the defining element of Asia - her herbs. This issue will cover the healing values of herbal plants and other species across the Asian continent, including the Middle East. Explore the culturally-unique ways that these herbs were utilised in indigenous communities in the early years of civilisation and how they have evolved and adapted themselves into modern-day cuisines and healing blends.

To wrap up 2021 and welcome 2021, we tackle the ever prevailing topic of climate change, which has a plagued our world for seemingly endless amounts of time and has only gotten more pressing as the years wear on. Tracing back to its origins, we will explore the different ways in which the actions of humanity have resulted in the onset of climate change. Awareness on climate change is on the rise but every day, forests are still shrinking, wildlife are still dying off and pollutants of all sorts are still harming the environment. Taking a look at our past, present and future, the science, history and solutions to climate change will be explored. Along the way we will also look at those that are doing their utmost to persevere our world and make it more sustainable.

In the final issue, AG will release its annual Passport magazine, which will take a deep dive into parts of Asia that are off the beaten path. Found in the furtherest corners of the world, these places have managed to stay mostly of the public eye and have remained a  point of intrigue for many. Traversing the unexplored, we will guide you from the highest points in Asia to the coldest and lowest.
