It’s the double anniversary issue! Truck & Driver launched all the way back in 1984 – smack-bang in the middle of ‘The Golden Age’ of trucking when UK roads were alive with British-built commercial vehicles rubbing shoulders with European makes, manual gearboxes were still the norm and everyone was listening to cassette tapes. To celebrate our birthday, we've had a dive back through the archives and found some real gems in our early editions of the mag.

2024 is also the 60th year that Scania has been operating in the UK. To mark the occasion, we’ve got some great Griffin content for you to dig in to, including CJ Leonard’s prize pair of top-power V8s in both cabover and T-cab flavours, Andidrain’s awesome fleet of highly specialised drainage trucks, an in-depth look at how Scanias have evolved over 60 years in this country, and we’ve also giving away some top prizes in our Scania competition.

A bit lower down the power range is our cover truck: Ian Roberts’ stunning new FH 500 TC Aero. This operator is no stranger to push the envelope when it comes to his vehicles, and so far it’s bedding in very well indeed.

We also look at an unassuming, yet tough and reliable FH 540 logger at work for the aptly named Rob Woodward; explore some cracking FH16-750 heavy haulers from the pile-driving fleet of ProDrive; get up close with a super-unusual FM Tridem with 540 bhp engine on the fleet of BT Jones; and swing by James Richardson’s yard to look at a trio of very special Volvos – his show-winning FH16 Siberian Express, a rare early FH16 and an immaculate F12.

This month, we’re taking a big leap into the high, wide and heavy world of heavy haulage. We’ve themed this edition to look at some of the operators, vehicles and trailers at work in this specialised field. Some highlights: a close inspection of Plant Speed’s all-new TGX 8x4 250-tonner; a wider look at how oversize and overweight loads are moved in the UK and further afield by some of the most well-known operators; Collins Earthworks’ mighty V5 Volvo FH16-750 heavy plant mover; and a deep look back at the history of heavy haulage in the UK, from steam power to modern-day diesel-drinking record breakers.

There’s loads more too this issue, including a week-long road test of Merc’s Actros L2548 tractor unit, Asset Alliance’s customised fleet of show trucks, Tony McGovern’s extensive collection of classic trucks and a report from the all-new Truckfest Wales.

Taking the spotlight is none other than Ryan Gorrett’s Scania T-cab. It’s an unusual truck, to say the least – and the story of how it has evolved at the family firm of D&F Super Cranes makes for very interesting reading.

But this T-cab isn’t the only headline-grabbing truck we have in store – another is DSL Commercial’s mighty DAF XG+, which carries the Royal Mail logo thanks to its work collecting the postal company’s trailers for repair. It’s a fine new flagship that’s had loads of bells and whistles added (not literally, that would be weird).

Also of note is Thompson Transport’s big-power TGXs. Packing meaty 15-litre D38s, the Irish fleet has won awards for its trucks and the operator is a staunch supporter of MAN.

Elsewhere this month, Dougie has been out for a week road-testing one of Shuttleworth’s manual XF dairy tankers. It’s Team T&D regular Joe Ashton’s truck and working it has certainly been an eye-opener – but how did the stick-shifting DAF hold up in Dougie’s hands? Find out inside!

Welcome to our bumper sized 2024 Scania special! The June issue of Truck & Driver is packed with ‘Super’ Scanias from retro classics to the very latest models, from small to large, rigid and articulated.

Editor’s Choice is an unusual Scania R530 V8 drawbar outfit which is as striking as it is versatile. Progressing through the issue, we take the new 13-litre flagship 560S and put it to the test for a week. There’s also some unique 420S rigids on full air at Hinks Transport, a million mile 124 at Mason Brothers, some classic-shape R-series Toplines hard at work at Skinners Transport and a tough as nails 164 from Ireland which has had a recent restoration. Hello and welcome to the digital edition of T&D, as the year draws to a close and we enter the festive period we wish you and your family all the best and thank you for your support throughout 2022. We’ve got another cracking selection of trucks for you to enjoy.

Our Editor’s Choice is WH Malcolm’s stunning Scania R560 show truck, which showcases a number of bespoke modifications. Built to the highest of standards, the truck had previously worked hard pulling low loaders for the firm’s construction division.

Another impressive fleet flagship is the gorgeous blue Volvo FH16 750 from the rapidly expanding Lion’s Logistics. It’s a real head turner while also proving an excellent choice for the work they do. Another impressive FH16 is the final truck driven by the late Mick “The Beast” Goddard of TS Transport, who pay tribute to the hugely popular and much missed driver.

We’ve got a double helping of Renault Range-T High 520 Evolutions too, as we pay a visit to Barclay Transport in the Scottish Highlands and Wilson McCurdy Jnr in Northern Ireland. Both excellent examples of a truck that’s really come of age with the latest revisions.

Owner-drivers are the life blood of T&D and we’re delighted to have our Team T&D contributor Russell Oliver in the spotlight as he and his partner Louise have made the leap to running their own trucks successfully with a pair of smart Scania R450s. Hard graft but the rewards are there if you work for them.

Meanwhile we take a look at some fairground trucks along with a classic Scania 111, and Peter Davies opens up a new series “Then and Now” focussing on how some fleets have evolved over the years.

Not ony that there’s a truck racing update, a diary from Paul O’Callaghan’s latest Euro adventures and Cameron Allan returns to Team T&D. Paul’s also been to the epic Truckstar Assen show and we’ve got some cracking pics from there.
