The first thing I want to grab your attention is a commendable action done by Punjab government and DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation). Punjab government has waived off the license fee of outdoor media industry
for six months with effect from March 24,
2020. Although the industry is still on its path
of revival, the support provided by Punjab government even if it is for six months is a laudable effort. The second to follow suit was DMRC. As the lockdown and suspension of metro train services, DMRC suspended the license fee for OOH service providers from March 22, 2020 until September 30, 2020. We wish more governments follow the suit as OOH and advertising sector were one of the worst hit industries during the pandemic.

our industry. One was SPIA’s (Sign Printing Industries Association) 6th State Conference which took place from Nov 6, 2022 at CIAL Trade Fair and Exhibition Centre, Kochi, Kerala. The participation and cooperation of all the members in making the conference
a success is something to be proud of. The conference was inaugurated by V D Satheesan, Leader of Opposition of Kerala who offered every possible help on the problems faced by the industry including the flex ban. Let’s hope for the good!

Sign India Kerala edition to take place from November 4-6 at Kochi
Although the threat of the pandemic has not yet been over, it is delighting to
see life is back in track. Regarding the industry, expos are back. We were able to take part in Media Expo New Delhi 2022 and Sign India Chennai 2022. The restrictions were
in place at both places and we thought it could drain out the experience. However the organisers were able to create interesting experiences
and innovations under the restrictions at both places. You can find more details and interesting pictures of both in the inside pages.
The festival season is around the corner and brands are actively booking hoardings at prime locations to carry out their new campaigns. There is no doubt that OOH will have renewed interest among the brands and organisations
as the restrictions of the pandemic have almost lifted. As more and more people get out in the public, the hoardings will attract new consumers. Indian Signage industry is set to grow exponentially in the coming years. As many
retail outlets are expanding their footprint in the country it could lead to the development of the area with better infrastructure. The high-volume consumption of retail goods in the country also points out that the brands will have to find and adopt innovative ways to stay ahead of the game. The signage industry has an inevitable role in the marketing and advertising of these products.
Digital signage is gaining more and more demand from brands and advertisers. The easiness to handle them makes it the best option for them.

The major news from the industry in the past month was the Media Expo New Delhi 2021. The 47th edition of Media Expo has created an avenue for top decision makers from the marketing, advertising, signage and OOH industry. Held at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida from 18-20 November, Media Expo New Delhi 2021 concluded as
a crucial business avenue for the physical advertising fraternity with more than 100 brands under its belt.
Another news to rejoice was the top consumer companies decision to increase
the advertising spend. It will surely help the advertising and OOH industry in the revival. During the beginning of the pandemic many companies cut down the advertising budget
in a way to decrease the loss. However the companies now have learned that without branding or advertising activities they might lose their brand share. Let us hope that the industry recovers fast.

events which took place in India after Covid 19 pandemic created havoc. Although traders from abroad were absent due to the travel restrictions, there were enough products and technologies
to compensate their absence. We can hope that very soon we will be able to meet up without restrictions and discuss about the latest trends in indoor, outdoor advertising and signage industry.

OOH is on the revival mode with many brands beginning new campaigns. Digital OOH is also witnessing growth across the nation. In DOOH itself 3D LED billboards are the latest trend in the West. We are now facing the second wave of Covid 19. The only good news is that vaccination is in progress and we all can hopefully get it soon. Keep yourself and your loved ones safe until then.
There is no doubt that Covid 19 had shattered most industries. Our signage industry is no exception to it. When industry showed signs of revival then came the second wave. Most states imposed lockdown to control the spread of the disease. Again our industry got affected. Earlier we had requested the state government for permission to visit the unit
in two days and to run the machinery during
the lockdown. However no permission was granted to us. Things are no better in the second wave of Covid 19 too. Although we have requested for permission to the new minister in a memorandum submitted, there is no reply from their side.
Another thing we want to bring into your attention is the flex ban imposed by the Kerala state. Now when the flex ban is in effect and all units under SPIA (Signage Producers Industry Association) had turned into eco-friendly
and recyclable materials for printing, many advertising agencies operating from outside Kerala are still using the banned flex. Corporate groups are largely their customers. While we still continue to not use the flex, agencies from outside Kerala are using them in the state freely. State owned enterprises Kerala Bank, KSFE are also among the establishments which use the banned flex for advertising.

and digital advertising platforms. According to KPMG, India’s advertising sector experienced 13.9% growth in 2019 and is further projected to grow by 10.62% till 2021. Kerala is the latest state to impose ban on flex apart from a few other states. SPIA (Sign Printing Industries Association), the single platform of sign printing unit owners in Kerala has already approached authorities expressing their concern over the industry on which the ban could adversely affect. Already the association had made clear to the government to collect and recycle PVC Flex and such a hasty decision from government was unexpected.
A ban on PVC Flex alone won’t solve the problem of harmful plastic waste especially when plastic covers and products are readily available. Let us wait hopefully for a wise decision from the government.

The second event was IAA World Congress
which took place at our own Kochi, Kerala from
Feb 20-22. The 44th edition of the IAA World
Congress had a special significance. It is for the
first time the World Congress came to India. The
venue was The Grand Hyatt Lulu International
Convention Centre Bolgatty, Kochi Kerala which
again contributed much to the state’s tourism
industry. The state was able to make it clear
to the world that it has recovered from the
aftermaths of the devastating floods in the last
year. The theme of the Congress was “Brand
Dharma” to bring to life the basic principles
that a brand has to follow to connect with its
customers and society at large.
