Indian BioServices Industry growing at 19% crosses Rs 26000 crore

Indian BioServices industry comprising of over 1000 players in the field of clinical research, contract research, contract development and manufacturing has seen significant growth in the recent past and witnessed a 19% growth in 2018-19 by crossing Rs 26000 crore. Contract research, development and manufacturing is contributing the most in BioServices industry with less than 10% is coming from clinical research organisations.

Can India Reclaim API Throne from China?
Despite having the third-largest pharmaceutical industry by volume in the world and being the largest manufacturer of generic medicines globally, India is heavily dependent on China for imports of raw materials, Key Starting Materials (KSMs), and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). India is the source of around 60,000 generic brands across 60 therapeutic categories and manufactures more than 500 different APIs. However, India imports about 70 per cent of its APIs from China as it’s a cheaper option than manufacturing them domestically. There were 58 APIs in which India was heavily dependent on China. In the case of 45 APIs, India was dependent on China for 100 per cent of imports. Out of these 58 APIs, 29 APIs are manufactured through fermentation and 29 APIs are manufactured through chemical synthesis. The Department of Pharmaceuticals has drawn up a list of 56 APIs to prioritise them for the Make-in-India initiative. These include APIs or bulk drugs that go into the making of essential drugs, such as antibiotics, anti-HIV medicines, and the humble but indispensable paracetamol. The plan to make APIs in India has been in the works for some time but the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR ) was engaged only recently. Can India Create 50K BIOTECH STARTUPS?

BioSpectrum India, a leading B2B media platform in Lifesciences space since 2003 has re-launched its ranking special edition in June 2019 after gap of 2 years. In this survey we looked at BioIncubators (both private and public) spread across India based on their achievements in the past financial year – 2020-21.
A detailed questionnaire (survey form) was sent to over 40 BioIncubators to capture the needed information for the year 2020-21 for the analysis. This
was done during April – May 2022. BioIncubators  shared information with us to the extent it was possible by them.

Indian biopharma industry HITS Rs 33K Cr WITH 13% GROWTH
Amidst the pandemic, the Indian Biopharma Industry, with over 300 companies, has witnessed a good growth of 13 percent, 2 per cent less than the previous year’s 15 percent growth rate. This growth was largely driven by the performance of the Indian biopharma companies which have done very well as against multinational companies. As a result, the Indian Biopharma Industry has crossed the Rs 33,000 crore mark for the year 2020-21 over the previous year’s figure of Rs 29,176 crore.
The Indian Biopharma industry, comprising hormones, insulin, blood products and vaccines recorded a sales revenue of Rs 33,067 crore for the year 2020-21.
