The 45th G7 summit is all set to begin at the seaside town of Biarritz in France where heads of state from seven of the world’s largest economies will descend. Apart from the G7 group of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom and United States, French President Emmanuel Macron has also invited India along with other partner countries and African nations, to a special session at the summit.

In this issue of Biz@India we see the diverse relation be it cultural, political or economical, India shares with the G7 countries and the challenges India has in addressing the issue of inequality in practically all the senses of the word. With its theme “Shaping of a new India” the ninth edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2019, starts

technology, the summit has a few other novelties, like the Africa Day to highlight the historical
connections between Africa and Gujarat. Around 20,000 delegations are expected to take part in the
event. The event will also focus on promoting startups and the IT sector in the region. One of the
main highlights of this edition is the famed Bullet train project to connect Ahmedabad with Mumbai,
the first high speed line in the country that is being built by the Japanese and which is expected to
be operational by mid-2022. The state will not just showcase its pet project but will also highlight the
recently inaugurated Statue of Unity the world’s tallest statue honouring India’s first deputy, prime
minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Katowice: Make or Break for Climate Change

Almost three years after the Paris Agreement, environment specialists from around the world are gathering in Katowice in Poland to take the important step towards protecting the planet from global warming. The meeting is meant to adopt a rule book that would govern monitoring of the implementation of the Paris Agreement. For its part, India is expected to play a major role in the negotiations, especially as one of the largest economies and a leading developing nation. The country is moving towards reducing emissions through transition to renewable energy, adoption of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and Electric Vehicles (EVs), but the country also has its own set of challenges such as seemingly uncontrolled waste generation as well as air pollution of ‘hazardous’ nature. India can use help from the developed economies, to fight its challenges, and this issue of Biz@India talks about not just what India needs and where it is lacking but also what sustainable ideas it has to offer to the world.

In this special issue of @biz@india for @SIAL, the biannual food show in Paris, we bring to you the latest developments and changes on the Indian platter and in the processing sphere. Not only are Indians eating better and more, but are also opting increasingly for super-foods or healthier foods – be it local or sourced from any part of the world. The search for healthier options has also extended to the famous Indian sweet tooth, with the sprouting of numerous organic bakeries and beverages in various metros.

There is also an increasing focus on health, food safety, and hygiene in the entire food chain. The farmers are being trained to adopt organic farming or sustainable farming by using minimum resources, while keeping the soil and other natural resources pure and healthy, notably through innovations and technologies brought by start-ups

However, a lot of work needs to be done in building the logistics of food handling, storage and transport from the farm to the market and then on to the consumers.

Another threat is from natural disasters. There are also numerous rail and road accidents as well as industrial mishaps, which means India’s civil defence teams need better equipment and training.

As we once again gather for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Week here in Paris, a lot has changed since the last major gathering of businesses and policy makers from around the world that took place in Davos during the World Economic Forum in late January.

The mood then was very optimistic and outlook robust. Global businesses were extremely upbeat as the world economy had just completed its best year in over a decade, with a 3.8 pc growth. On the political side, too, things were looking stable.

Since then, things seem to have gone berserk in practically all spheres, including economies and geopolitics.
