Logistics Update Africa – Nov-Dec 2022

 

In the last issue of 2022 we turn our attention to fresh produce and the logistics for them. Lakshmi Ajay, in her cover story, finds out how infrastructure upgrades, collaboration, more air connections, cold storage facilities, government support, and new markets could spell good tidings for the flower and fresh industry of Africa. The special report is about how African flower exporters have found sea freight as a reliable alternative to air to move flowers in controlled atmosphere containers. According to findings in the industry report, sustainability is becoming a key to humanitarian logistics. The country report and interview in this issue are of and from Nigeria. The West African country, the report finds, should become a production-based commercial hub to provide the critical mass of air cargo to feed over 13 cargo airports. Basis Agboarumi, MD of SAHCO, in the interview, says it is time for Nigeria to overcome stunted growth. The focus section argues that to have AfCFTA implemented effectively, there is a lot more that the continent needs to do collectively, including maritime infrastructure of ports and terminals.

The September-October 2024 issue spotlights various aspects of Africa's logistics landscape, from cold-chain packaging innovations to infrastructure development. The cover story by Rajarshi Chatterjee underscores the role of public-private partnerships in addressing infrastructure challenges and boosting Africa’s self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical logistics.

The feature story by Parijat Sourabh highights Africa's cold chain market is projected to reach $14.85 billion by 2029, with innovative packaging solutions tackling logistical challenges.

Libin Chacko Kuria’s country report focuses on Rwanda, which, despite being landlocked, is emerging as a logistics gateway for central and eastern Africa through investments in airports, dry ports, and cold-chain infrastructure, though challenges remain.

Nehal Gautam’s industry report explores Africa’s complex but promising path to eco-friendly logistics, highlighting its potential for a sustainable, efficient, and inclusive sector.

The July-August 2024 issue of LUA focuses on intra-continental trade with the Cover Story on rapid growth in Africa’s e-commerce sector and a Special Report on AfCFTA’s potential to drive growth and reshape the continent's economic future.

 The Cover Story digs deep to see how Africa's e-commerce sector is transforming logistics across the
continent. “With rising internet access and smartphone adoption, online shopping demand surges,
presenting unique challenges and opportunities for logistics innovation,” it reads. Meanwhile, the Special Report points out that the boost in intra-African trade promised by AfCFTA is only possible by tackling regulatory hurdles and fostering integration.

We have another Special Report that looks beyond the African continent and particularly the maritime chokepoints across the world and its impact on air freight. 

This issue also have interviews with David Ambridge, Director of Cargo and Mail at TAAG Angola and Askin Demir, CEO of Blaise Diagne International Airport.

The May-June 2024 issue Cover Story by Parijat Sourabh emphasises the upswing witnessed by Africa's airfreight sector. As he puts it, “While challenges exist, initiatives to enhance capabilities and regional integration are gaining momentum.”

The issue has an Event Report on the recently concluded Flower Logistics Africa and Perishable Logistics Africa 2024. 

In the Industry Report on air cargo charters, Rajarshi Chatterjee reports that the African air cargo charter market is rising despite infrastructure deficiencies and geopolitical conflicts.

Jyothi Shankaran’s Special Report on e-commerce delved into the very nature of African demography.  “Africa's young population, with a median age of 18 years, is pushing digital commerce adoption in a mobile-first environment,” he writes. 

Focus is on ground handling and Nehal Gautam pointed out that by confronting its challenges, investing in infrastructure, and embracing innovative solutions, it can become the engine that propels Africa's air cargo sector to new heights.

The Cover Story by Libin Chacko Kurian highlights the pivotal role of logistics in shaping Africa's competitiveness in the global market for flowers, perishables, and agricultural products, highlighting how strengthening the supply chain ecosystem can unlock strategic advantages for the continent.

Meanwhile, Focus is about the Port Community Systems and its role in revolutionising the port sector by making it efficient and sustainable.

Logistics Update Africa Jan Feb 2023 Magazine

In the first issue of 2023, Logistics Update Africa’s cover story examines the momentum building up in unlocking the full potential of Africa’s air cargo sector and how air cargo, as a mode of transport, should position itself as a premium mode that offers speed and reliability to shippers.
