The authors’ unbiased analysis reinforces our comprehension of the shortcomings of the environment summit that gave rise to the consequential outcomes. They opine— the most relevant COP in the coming years will be the COP 2028. As India has proposed to host the COP in 2028, it will have to play a decisive role not only in shaping the character of emerging global governance of climate change, but also in bringing together the international community against the climate change.

Expectations for the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UNFCCC, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, were high. While climate finance dominated the discourse—and rightly so— other critical issues were also at stake. These included progress on the Global Goal on Adaptation, the Mitigation Work Programme, market-based approaches under Article 6, the Loss and Damage Fund, and the UAE Dialogue on Just Transition. The Nordic countries, known for their commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection, offer invaluable knowledge and technologies to improve water management practices. From state-of-the-art water purification systems to sustainable irrigation techniques, Nordic expertise provides crucial tools to mitigate the effects of climate change on water resources. In this thought-provoking article, Biba Jasmine discusses that by utilizing the expertise and cutting-edge technologies from the Nordic region, Indian industries can enhance their water management systems, reduce pollution, and increase resource efficiency.

Microplastic pollution in terrestrial environments poses a significant threat to ecosystems and human health. These tiny plastic particles can be found ubiquitously in soils, sediments, and even in the air. Once in the soil, microplastics can disrupt soil structure, affecting water retention and nutrient cycling, thus impairing the growth and health of plants. There are concerns about the potential transfer of microplastics to crops consumed by humans, raising questions about their impact on human health. Anagha Krishnan asserts that microplastic pollution is a significant driver accelerating climate change. This article offers insights into the persistence and toxicity of microplastics in the terrestrial environment.

Sand is vital for a country like India due to its ever-expanding urban population and construction needs. In this insightful article, Dr Indumathi Somashekar highlights that sand dredging is the process of excavating sand, silt, and other sediment from the bottom of water bodies using large machinery. Dredging is carried out for various purposes such as beach reclamation and maintaining waterways for the smooth navigation of boats and ships. However, sand dredging could do more harm than good if not adequately planned. Widespread awareness of the importance of sand and the drastic effects of dredging is the first step to saving sand. Over the last decade, the Government of India has passed several regulations to curb sand mining, which could serve as a starting point.

The UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28, recently concluded in Dubai, UAE. COP28 made significant progress on various fronts, including the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund established at COP27. It also conducted the inaugural ‘Global Stocktake’ and laid the groundwork for a fossil-fuel-free future through a groundbreaking decision. In this article, Dr Livleen K Kahlon says that acquiring green skills has become an essential requirement of our time as green skills pave the way for job opportunities that contribute to the preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Design of quality education and training opportunities for young people is a pre-requisite for enhanced employability under the sector of green skills. Institutions design activities and projects to meet the rising expectations of the young minds. To be able to match requirements of green jobs to be created in future, a timely investment in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is therefore highly recommended.

While preparedness, alerts and warnings, and other measures of heat action plans have vastly reduced the impact of heat waves, the duration and frequency of climate-induced heat waves are on the rise. Jency Samuel says that as heat waves impact people’s health and livelihood, and the nation’s economy adversely, there is a need to improve and better implement the heat action plans.

World Environment Day 2023 serves as an important reminder that the actions we take to mitigate plastic pollution have a significant impact. Now, more than ever, we must intensify these efforts and swiftly transition to a circular economy. Avanti Roy-Basu and Girija K Bharat say that as the world celebrates World Environment Day in 2023 focusing on “solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution”, it is crucial to understand that each one of us has multiple roles to play to address this global crisis.

In this article, Sharada Balasubramanian highlights that a series of flames have been breaking out, year after year, at the Brahmapuram landfill in Kerala. Yet, it was not taken seriously. This year, the massive uncontrollable fire breakout urged the Kochi Corporation to take serious steps to resolve this issue as it impacted the health of people, and the environment. Brahmapuram is the only landfill that is a bone of contention in Kerala where solid waste management, otherwise is decentralized and systematic. Plans are underway to solve this crisis that the Kochi Corporation is facing after the Brahmapuram incident.

In this article, Himanshu Kumar and Vivek Kumar say that a new tradition of scholarship must evolve to understand the village systems at the conceptual and theoretical levels. The way rural and village has been historically interpreted and
understood needs refinement as the colonial imprint has distorted the existing fabric of the rural social systems. Agriculture, peasantry, land use, social systems and infrastructure, and indigenous technical knowledge systems need a more profound
understanding of structural-functional and comparative analysis approaches.

In this article, Manisha Jain and Dr Kriti Akansha highlight that it is necessary to support long-term thinking, transformation, flexibility and innovation while taking the associated climate risks into consideration to attain climate resilience. There is a need for a robust framework that ensures climate policies are integrated into all sectors and that planning, implementation, and evaluation are strictly followed.

The United Nations General Assembly at its 75th session in March 2021 declared 2023 the International Year of Millets (IYM 2023). In this article, Livleen K Kahlon says that with the UNGA declaring 2023 as the International Year of Millets, there’s a renewed focus on these nutritious grains. This move will serve best in the interest of developing countries, where almost 97 per cent of global millet production happens. But, it is going to take a lot of effort to change the mindset and lifestyles of consumers towards a millet-positive diet.

When we talk and act on climate action and the energy transition in emerging economies, the discussion can range from topics such as climate mitigation, adaptation, energy transition, financing, and business model innovation to next generation technologies. In this article,
Biba Jasmine says that given the current debate and discourse around net zero and carbon neutrality, it is important to pause for a moment and reflect on whether companies need to realign their purpose to serve a more holistic set of stakeholders—including the environment—
and leverage additional channels to demonstrate their commitment to more sustainable activities along the value chain. It stands to reason to ask what companies can—and must—do to make progress towards a low-carbon economy.

COP27 took place in November 2022 in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh. The Conference concluded with a historic decision to establish and operationalize a loss and damage fund. This can be achieved by following the globally established business rules of MSW management. In this paper Dr. Anil Kumar Agnihotri discusses how MSW is a serious issue in India needing immediate attention for managing it sustainably and for making Bharat Swachh and healthy.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen generated from renewable sources of energy. In a far-sighted move, India has launched an ambitious Hydrogen Mission in August 2021 and further the Indian government announced the Green Hydrogen Policy in February 2022. In this article, Lata Vishwanath says that production of clean/green hydrogen gas is being seen as the answer to climate change mitigation in the decades to come. Because of its vital role in oil and gas industry, refineries, fertilizers, and a host of other applications as an energy carrier the world can be made less dependent on fossil fuels.

In this article, Biba Jasmine highlights how India maintains a cordial balance between its rich traditional heritage and modernity without negatively impacting the environment. But, she also feels that technological advances alone or smart governance alone may not be
able to solve the fundamental problem that environmental governance must address. While environmental governance is becoming more comprehensive, it is clear that the path and pace of development are constantly redefining the problems it faces.

This month’s cover story ‘Microplastics in Ganga River’ delves into two recent studies that have revealed the high prevalence of microplastics in the Ganga River basin, and pointed to the risks involved to freshwater biodiversity in the region. The
first of these studies, “Quantitative Analysis of Microplastics along River Ganga” by Toxics Links, was done by examining the waters of the Ganga River off Haridwar, Kanpur and Varanasi at several points in the respective cities, and documenting the
kinds of microplastics present in the waters. The second study, “Risk Assessment of Plastic Pollution to Migratory Species in the Mekong and Ganga River Basins” done for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Convention on
Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) examined the waters at several points of the Mekong and Ganga basins.
