The most important centre of faith for Buddhists in Colombo and its suburbs is Kelaniya. Kelaniya has occupied a prominent place in Sinhalese literature. In commemorating the Buddha's visit, the Duruthu Perahera at Kelaniya was inaugurated in January 1927.
