Only rarely will we see the enclosed space being celebrated while the building architecture is skillfully executed with professionalism and mastery, yet also with humility and humbleness.

 Architect Kerry Hill’s house for Mahesh and Shaila Amalean is a case in point. Located in an exclusive ward of Colombo where the facades of the neighbouring houses jostle for attention, its austere massing, silhouetted against the skyline, is conspicuous in its simplicity.

Holiday homes allow an architect to explore new ideas and thoughts that can push architectural thinking to a level, which may not always be possible in a more domestic everyday situation. These buildings are able to suspend the functionality of everyday life and look at architecture purely for its aesthetic and spiritual qualities.

Shipping containers – commodities of globalisation; self-sustainable, lockable cabins; are breaking new ground in the developing world as disaster shelters, housing for the urban poor, as community facilities and as urban infrastructure. This opens new opportunities for architects to grapple with, to creatively tweak these rusty piles of corten steel boxes into the much needed spaces for habitation.

Paolo Soleri, the visionary Italian-American architect and theorist who built the famed urban setting ‘Arcosanti’ in the Arizona high desert, dedicated his life to promoting an art of living that re-establishes the all-important relationship between human beings and the environment they live in.

Icon is C Anjalendran’s latest built work in Pakistan and his second project outside Sri Lanka. 

Contemporary Urban Residential Architecture in Sri Lanka is a reflection of changing lifestyle patterns of urban society with the demands of work, time, social settings and response to tropical conditions. It is a transition from the nostalgic vernacular roots where Courtyard houses lined with shaded open verandahs and internal rooms transformed to settings with limited views restricted to smaller urban plot sizes in compact living environments.




Urban parks are an increasingly popular concept that has revitalized the main townships of Colombo. The revival schemes implemented in and around Colombo not only improve the visual image of the city but provides much needed space for recreation. Efforts are taken to energise the city atmosphere whilst addressing concerns of safety and accessibility. Issues such as rain water drainage and seasonal floods are also tackled through increased water retention capacities of wetland parks and newly dredged reservoirs.

The clients’ request to Archt Damith Premathilake was a calm and tranquil house with ample privacy along with security on their 26 perch land at Mahara close to the Kandy-Colombo Road.

“The creation of a design is subsequent the client needs to be studied first,” says Archt Sudesh Nanayakkara. He believes that the client’s personality should be reflected in the design. 

Within the wilderness of Induruwa, Art of minimalism came to life as Archt Russell Dandeniya designed this simple holiday home fusing elegance with the surrounding picturesque landscape.

Archt Moses designed a transparent facade to merge with the idyllic lake and its surrounding arboreal landscape, resulting in a uniquely enchanting spa.

Surrounded by the verdant mountains of Gampola, the Mount Havana Boutique Villa retains the aura of its past amidst its newly refurbished façade.

The holiday resort, ‘Laya Safari’ at Palatupana, Yala owned and managed by the Sri Lanka Army, in the deep southern wild, borders the Yala National Sanctuary. Facing the rolling waves of the Indian Ocean to the South, this is the first of the Army’s cabana-type star class resorts.

Jungle Beach Resort is a unique Resort on the East Coast which drew its entire concept and character from its physical context. Located in the Tourism Development Zone in Kuchchaveli, Trincomalee this 48 key Resort was a design-built project by International Construction Consortium with Studio ViVeGe as the Architects.

A retreat to the wilderness with creature comforts to spare was the client’s requirement in the making of a holiday bungalow for his extended family. Thus, Archt Nandika Samaranayake endeavoured a design centred around an open verandah with a touch of sophistication, situated at the border of the Yala wildlife reserve.

Within the vicinity of Atthidiya marsh at Boralasgamuwa, the house stands out in unique rustic colours, yet spells out simplicity. The triple storey brick house with peculiar elegance was designed on merely six perches. A multipurpose nest, the house is not the Architect’s permanent residence, but has the functional possibility of being used as a home and an office space when required.

Royal Fernwood porcelain showroom on Havelock Road grabs the attention of the passerby. The showroom airs its wares well as the container provides an unobtrusive backdrop to the porcelainware on display.

A lone carriage painted in blue attached to a long line of red hued train carriages signaled the latest addition to Sri Lanka’s railway system. A pioneering venture of Expo Rail and created by KWA Architects, the brightly coloured carriage signified the dawn of a new era of luxury train services in Sri Lanka.

Simplicity and openness are the hallmarks of Archt Varuna de Silva’s creation, a house that lies in a quiet private road off Gower Street in Colombo 5. Its bright, airy spaces blend seamlessly with the garden giving the impression of spaciousness and freedom despite being cut off from the exterior world. 

Piyal and Shyamini Goonethilake dreamt of living in a home that was designed
to showcase their love for nature and appreciation for the environment around them. That is when they contacted Architect Susil Lamahewa to design for them an ‘open house’ which was akin to living in a garden in keeping with both their personalities.

About 100m from the pristine waters of Seenimodera Bay, Tangalle lies Shela House, a simple two bedroom bungalow built as a private escape for a foreign national who comes to the island annually.

Sprawling on the banks of the Ganges River in the pastoral hamlet of Raichak-on-Ganges in West Bengal, the Ganga Kutir, Resort and Spa is a unique experience of environment and a subtle blend of Bengali and Sri Lankan culture.

Emerging like an oasis in the tranquil oceanfront haven of Passekudah bay, Maalu Maalu Resorts & Spa appeared and made its mark on 30th May 2011 as the first resort of its kind on this pristine coastal village.

Development activities connected with public spaces such as the Galle Face Green, Independence Square, Vihara Maha Devi Park, Race Course, Clock Tower in Fort are anticipated in the near future for improving public participation and uplifting the tourism industry. The Dutch Hospital shopping precinct is one such example.

of the building which dates back to the early Dutch era. 

Architecture is a broad subject encompassing different elements. These elements could range from building a new structure to renovating an already existing one to give it a new life. The Crown Spa and Salon project undertaken by the PWA Interiors is an example of the latter as it has been salvaged from its dilapidated state to glow with a new found life.

The idea of a tent for many would conjure up images of nomadic wanderings, or grittily braving the elements. Dolphin Beach in Kalpitiya, is a tented resort, which aims to dispel this common notion and prove that closeness to nature and opulent comfort need not be poles apart.

The SLIA organised a design competition for the Jaffna Cultural Centre (JCC), at the request of the Indian High Commission to hold a national design competition for the development of conceptual designs for the project in order to select a suitable consultant architect for the project.

What makes Archigram so unique is that the Archigram group was able to capture the attention of not only the architects but reach out and create a change in mass culture through only the publication of their magazine “The Architectural + Telegram” = Archigram.

Tucked away amidst tall leafy foliage and a paddy field in the picturesque village of Aranwela, Tangalle this 100 year old ‘walawwa’ presented a charming setting as well as a challenge for Archt Pradeep Kodikara to combine the old world charm with contemporary architecture.




Sri Lanka is at crossroads. After a 30 year conflict that brought great hardships to the people and endless destruction to its built-environment, Sri Lanka has finally emerged victorious in bringing the avalanche of social, cultural and environmental catastrophes of the past 30 years to a complete halt. Today it treads along a new path with a vision for a prosperous future. Although the journey has already begun, the path is not all that clear.

The People’s Leasing Company Headquarters – designed by the architects at Design Group Five – is a building that incorporates many new materials and technology in its architecture, bringing forth some novel elements perviously unseen in Sri Lanka.

The view from the Grandstand of the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium is a breathtaking panorama of mountains, lakes and jungle extending deep into the horizon. 

The most prominent design features of the Udayapuram Thamil Vidyalam in Periyakallar, Batticaloa, are possibly its simplicity of form, consideration to the arid climate of Batticaloa and the bursts of colour that give it character.

Continuing an ancient Buddhist temple building tradition, Archt Chinthaka Wickramage drew inspiration from ‘Tam pita viharas’ (building on pillars) for the community centre in Thalalla, Matara.

Designed to shelter and nurture precious family life within its walls, The Envelope is a private and cozy home built by amalgamating natural elements and modern technologies.

Designed to reflect the tastes of its occupants and blend in with its surrounding terrain Archt Madhawa Premaratne has manipulated a layout across a footprint of only ten perches to maximise the feeling of space and openness. 

Within the Victoria Golf and Country Resort in Kandy, Eagles’ Ridge is a residential location that offers breathtaking beauty surrounded by the Victoria Lake, views of the golf course and the Knuckles mountain range as a backdrop.

The second cycle of THE GEOFFREY BAWA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE in architecture has just concluded following a long drawn short listing process. The event coincided with the
92nd birth anniversary of Sri Lanka’s most influential and prolific architect, recognised as having been one of the greatest Asian architects of the second half of the Twentieth Century. 

Seeking simplicity through a patiently practiced planning technique can best describe Japanese architecture. 

Sri Lankan culture is interlaced with a vast diversity of foods. A variety of cuisines have originated in different provinces of the country, each one taking pride in their authentic blends. An array of delightful sweets, fruits and spices can be found around the island that has become part and parcel of the cultural identity of each destination.

Located 25 kilometres east of Kandy and spread across two mountain ranges, the Victoria Golf and Country Resort is home to a variety of breathtaking scenery and beautifully landscaped cottages.

Located at a relatively quiet stretch of road in Induruwa by the side of the Galle road, ‘Escoffier’ restaurant is intended to catch the eye of the passing motorist. Explaining his design concept Archt Suneth Perera says that he wanted to fashion “an icon or a pause in that journey”, a place which would induce the traveller to break journey and stop for a while.

Contemporary, modest and practical defines Archt Ravindu Karunanayake’s design of the Meal Cart bakery and pastry shop.

The Attapattu Walawwa, originally built by Mudliar Don Bastian Gooneratne in 1742 has been
the ancestral home of the Dias Abeysinghe and Gooneratne families for 269 years. 

Hidden amidst the thick foliage bordering the quiet waters of Bolgoda lake lies the weekend rest for a family of four.

Architects Sudesh Nanayakkara and Mangala Nelum Kumari, set forth to design a house in the suburbs amidst a coconut plantation, for a family that sought a living environment with a traditional and contemporary space.

Architect Sadev Wittachy has transformed a simple, rectangular space of no more than 2,500 square feet at the Gangaramaya Temple, into an inspirational art gallery where an array of photographs portray the entire artistic tradition of temple paintings in Sri Lanka.

An ancestral home redefined. Bordering the Ulagalla and Wannanmaduwa reservoirs, in Anuradhapura, the Boutique Hotel at Ulagalla is built on 52 acres of sprawling land. 

Sprawling over 35 acres of land, Mirissa Hills, a cinnamon estate with various beautiful vistas and captivatingly designed and decorated buildings, lends itself seamlessly to being a relaxing holiday escape.

Architects Thushari and Thilan Koththigoda needed a homely space that spelt relaxation away from a busy and demanding work life. The inspiring design of the ‘House Full of Light’ located in Kaduwela, came into being to fulfill this purpose.

The two main requirements that influenced the design of this house are the site and the client’s brief. The client wanted a house which blended in with its surroundings with a lot of natural light and ventilation “I considered all these factors and realised that the ideal concept was a courtyard house,” says Archt Shobha Seneviratna.

The Western Province Aesthetic Resort on Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha, Colombo 7 grabs the interest of the passersby. The site, well shaded by towering mara trees has a serene and aesthetic disposition - an ideal setting for creative ideas to flourish and fresh talent to emerge.

DGS Holdings engaged The Design Group Five International to develop a modern luxury apartment complex on a 40 perch piece of land on Dabare Mawatha, Colombo 5.

Archt. Prasanna Jayalath has ventured to create living spaces that reflected the charms of the olden day manor house intermingling with congruent nuances of the contemporary in his design for the Pathiraja House.

Timber is one of the most popular and perhaps the earliest building materials in the history of world civilization.

Over the past century, St Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa stands as a forerunner of Catholic education in the region, with a structure that also boasts of architecture of the colonial heritage. However, recently, the college authorities required an expansion plan for the institute in order to address the growing needs of the school. The new Chapel and Resource Centre were undertaken as the final phase of the
resulting re-development project.

Embraced by the elements of mother earth, Green Paradise hotel lies nestled within a cove of greenery bordered by the Kumbukkande wewa and a mountainous rock on the other. Located in Dambulla on the fringes of the ancient Kalu Diya pokuna this agro-eco concept hotel has been designed to experience nature’s beauty.

Bamboo has a long history as a building material. It is widely used in construction throughout the world’s tropical and sub-tropical regions, with a range of applications to match or even exceed those of timber. In Central and South America, bamboo buildings of every description can be found - from low- grade temporary housing to exclusive, architect designed mansions.

Architect Dipika Dharmadasa describes how she transformed Cinnamon Grand’s un-used back lot into a traditional Sri Lankan village themed restaurant that is a reflection of the country’s rural architecture.


Cecil Balmond a Sri Lankan born structural engineer has taken a step further transforming the role of the engineer in contemporary architecture. 

Throughout history, light has been used as a medium for navigational aid not only in a literal and spatial sense but also metaphorically. In metaphorical terms, light is identified as a medium that conveys content, both informative and informational. Thus, designing with light offers immeasurable creative scope, as the design process is ultimately just the route followed to arrive at a particular point with in-between spaces lighted for the appreciation.

A large Banyan, the neighbouring buildings and even a marshy section of land responded to the award winning structure Architect Godridge Samuel had designed and built. The Resource Centre and Open-air Theatre emerged from a blend of modern, traditional, accessible and environmental themes.

Waruna Gomis, an architect by profession, has also risen high in a world which was once simply a hobby, a world which not only enhanced his creativity, but also helped him experience architecture through a different eye ... a camera lens.

 The domestic architecture of ancient Ceylon was influenced by sociological factors such as the caste system, based on land tenure, feudal landownership and elitism. Domestic architecture was regarded as the ultimate symbol of status expression. Further, environmental factors common to regions around the Indian Ocean also shaped the architecture in Ceylon, resulting in buildings suitable for the respective settings.

Archt Murad Ismail’s main idea for the Four Seasons resort in Landaa Giraavaru was to instill an image of the Maldives for what it truly was. “The whole idea was to come up with a more traditional modern regional style that one will remember - that they came to Maldives,” says the Architect.

Heritance Madurai, located in Madurai or the Temple City of South India, the site was once part of the British owned Madurai Mills, housing for their senior executives. In the early 1970s, a Club House was introduced to the complex to provide facilities to the staff of the Madurai Coats and the design for it was conceptualised by eminent Architect Geoffrey Bawa. In year 2007, Architect Vinod Jayasinghe, was tasked with renovating and extending this old Club House and the late Colonial houses to a hotel development.


The only challenge Archt Indika De Silva faced in his design for the Kenpark Factory and Product Development Centre in Bangladesh was that it should be an exceptional building that could withstand the test of the harshest of climes and yet retain its majesty.



Nelung Arts Centre is an establishment that aims to support and enhance arts, dance and theatre in Sri Lanka. This multi-purpose building encompasses a theatre, dance school, art gallery, office space and restaurant.

Transforming a cold structure of an abandoned oil mill to an abode in which art and culture is nurtured, moulded and sustained is eternally a challenge considering the functional dimensions of either task.

Architecture is a creative manipulation of mass, space and volume, enhanced and flavoured with textures, light and shadows and most importantly the functionality and practicality of cost and construction technology incorporated aesthetically.

Tracy Holsinger is a ‘Jill of many trades’ in her selected sphere being a theatre director, actor, writer, teacher, Arts administrator and once a radio personality - all revolving around the arts.

Architecture in powerhouses is not uncommon elsewhere in the world but it is a relatively new concept in Sri Lanka. Having been involved in more than a dozen similar projects both in Sri Lanka and abroad, Architect Palinda Kannangara has added a touch of architectural beauty to Kadawala 1 - a hydro power plant in Ginigathhena.

It was the desire of Mr and Mrs Sumithra Gunasekera to have a set of chalets with an open dining area and a swimming pool, where friends and family could relax in a quiet area in Agalawatta. Archt Sudarshana Senadeera was assigned the task of transforming a hillock to match their specifications and today, Duwahena is an ideal holiday retreat.

Sigiriya has long stood as testimony of the genius of ancient Sri Lankan civilisation. Built in the 5th century AD, it is both a monument of architectural ingenuity and historical worth. In meeting the long-felt need for an archeological museum at Sigiriya, much had to be considered, for the building had to be worthy of this international heritage site. Archt Chandana Ellepola describes how he met this challenge to create what has been hailed today as South Asia’s most attractive museum.

“A little piece of drama at the edge of the street” is Archt Arosha Perera’s description of his project Petal Guru, situated at the edge of Tickell Road, Borella.




Inspired by the spirit of the community, Architect M M G Samuel has revived schools in the Ampara district through innovative architecture, using different planes and vibrant colours. The architecture aims to bring hope not only to the students but also to the entire community thus signifying a new beginning in their lives.

Timeless in design and structure, the Heritance Ahungalle formerly known as the Triton was badly damaged by the tsunami that swept through Sri Lankan shores in December 2004. Combining sleek geometry that gives rise to a lively ambience and technology that promotes energy conservation, Architect Upendra Rajapaksha’s innovative project is truly a building of the future.

Located away from the congested town centre of Dambulla, this distinctive bus terminal is spread out unobtrusively against a mountainous backdrop of an ancient heritage site.

Located in a remote and unspoilt area, “River Retreat” is indeed a quiet getaway and an ideal holiday home surrounded by native plants, a backyard orchard and chirping birds throughout the day.

Nestled within the refreshing backdrop of the Madiwela wetland, this piece of architecture soars up to the sky; inspired by ‘a waadiya’, an open watch hut built elevated from the ground to ensure an unimpeded view.

Jetwing Hotels has always been in the nature conservation front and their work in coastline preservation at Ethukala, Negombo has resulted in an incredible stretch of beautiful, powdery brown sand beach, the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka. Channa Daswatte, an associate of the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects, obtained his first degree from the university of Moratuwa, and went on to gain a masters in advanced architectural Studies from the University of London in 1991. Made a director/partner of Geoffrey Bawa Associates Private Limited in 1997, he is currently Trustee of the Geoffrey Bawa Trust and the Lunuganga Trust.

Located in Thalawathugoda in the outskirts of the Colombo suburb, ‘Random Rust’ is a place of serene calm amidst practical function. 


Black and white, yin-yang, positive-negative are some contrasts that bring about a wholesome balance. Such is the outdoor-indoor relationships of a building and its immediate outdoor environment at a basic level. The landscape professional sees the entire city as an urban landscape, while the architect translates the same city to be a built environment.

Many large cities in Asia are the legacy of colonial rulers - built for their own purpose and use, but usually with great respect for local traditions. The colonial imagery may include buildings, streetscapes, parks or other landmarks. 

A city is not defined by one street or one building, but there are always some streets that seem to capture the essence of a city - its vibrancy, its character and its very pulse. While there may never be wide-scale agreement on which street epitomises the character of Colombo, The Architect choose to turn its spotlight on Alfred House Gardens in Colpetty.

Water's Edge, the youngest golf course in Sri Lanka and its environs have rapidly caught on as a location and a backdrop for varying social and commercial events.

Kandy is considered one of South Asia's leading historical cities. 

The residence of Architect Suchith Mohotti, set in 25 perches on reclaimed marshland in Pepiliyana is, in the architect's own words, "a nice place to hang out." A brief visit to his home proved that he was indeed right, and there were many unique advantages to living on the outskirts of a city.

The quarterly publication is the journal of the Institute of Architects, Sri Lanka. Done in collaboration with the Institute the magazine carries a theme with each issue and features projects and houses of local architects. Each covers interesting aspects in design, innovation and issues relevant to the present day to kindle the interest of both the general reader and architects alike. The magazine also features student projects, profile articles, features and latest news both local and international in the sphere of architecture.
