Hello there Moms, Dads and parents-to-be, and a warm welcome back to BabyTalk
magazine. We’ve left behind a really strange year, I must say, although we might have
to carry some of its effects into our new year. Face masks and social distancing will
have to stay a while, and so will hand-sanitising and avoiding crowded places, all for
the sake or our safety as a community. As I mentioned in our last issue, as a nation, we
have the right to feel proud of the way we have pulled through, so let’s look forward
to better times ahead!

We at BabyTalk wish to continue to offer young families in Malaysia the support they
need in parenting amidst the current pandemic, and we do so with informative and
eye-opening articles which you will find within these pages. Also, let’s go through some
really fine resolutions for new parents, and find out what’s the best time to start teaching
a baby, among others. We hope to always be by your side, dear parents, as a loyal
companion especially during these uncertain times. They say nothing beat flipping
through your favourite magazine, so we hope you’ll enjoy what’s in here for this month.

It is the time of the year when we pay homage to the brands of products and services which have served us well in the pregnancy, baby and parenting industry, as we have in the past decade and more. Acknowledgement for our prestigious annual event has been humbling, and participation incredibly uplifting, which pushes us year by year on our part to go further in ensuring it is a resounding success. After all, in the first place, we host this event in recognition of those popular brands we hold close to our hearts. None of this, however, would have been possible without your support and participation, dear readers, and we are grateful for you, always!

Motherhood, self care and sacrifices will never part, for, as every wise mom will testify, a concerned mom is one who will make absolutely sure she is always at her best health so as to be a successful carer and protector for her children. I myself, whose kids are already grown up, can hardly go a single day without thinking about my offspring, always wanting the best for them. Everything a mother does for her child is borne from the fact that she knows only how to love her children first before all else, even herself. 

Here at BabyTalk, we cover all topics related to motherhood - fertility health, pregnancy, confinement, as well as infant and child care. For over a decade, we have highlighted countless topics and issues surrounding motherhood and parenthood in general, and we’re still thrilled to this day to be the loyal companion to parents and parents-to-be throughout this most precious journey of their lifetime, right from the delicate preconception period itself!  Even a long-drawn pandemic has and will not alter our enthusiasm in providing support and information for the benefit of our beloved readers.

We are mere weeks away from year’s end and as parents, most of us tend to reflect
back on what the year has given us, taken from us, and all the ways it surprised us
too. And here’s when we take a step back, inhale, exhale slowly, and say, “No
regrets”, for everything is exactly the way it’s supposed to be. We are here, we are
alive, we know what we want for our families, and we will keep pushing towards
our respective goals, and eventually, we will get there!

As your faithful monthly companion, BabyTalk magazine finds it absolutely necessary
to keep you informed on the relevant goings-on in the arenas of pregnancy, baby &
child care, as well as parenting. Our annual BabyTalk & MamaPapa Readers’ Choice
Awards is just one of the many ways we pay tribute to the opinions of our readers,
whilst honoring the brands of products and services declared worthy of their
respective accolades. It is also a way of spreading the news of what is hot and
sought-after in the market. We have and will always be proud of our Award winners

Firstly, take it from us:  do not take it out on yourself, or on your family! What you are feeling is completely normal, and should subside soon enough. We have come a long way, haven’t we? While I am pleased that things are opening
up and we are gradually settling into the new normal, I still remind myself to stay
safe – not just for me, but for my loved ones as well. Needless to say, masks and
sanitisers are still my best friends! I think after the ordeal we have been through,
taking necessary steps to prevent the virus has become second nature to most of us.

A silver lining from all this is that we are now prioritising health like never before.
As parents, our child’s health and well-being are always on top of our minds –
especially when we have infants in our care. The recent emergence of MIS-C in
kids due to COVID-19 is terrifying, and with schools reopening, we must stay extra
vigilant. Thus, we now have the responsibility to educate our kids on what this
pandemic is all about and help them practise better safety measures when they are
out of the house.

Last but not least, a Happy, Merry, Wonderful Mother’s Day to all mamas and
mummies-to-be out there. All of you are truly queens in your own right and simply
the best in these trying times. Sure, we might have to miss that Mother’s Day dinner
at her favourite restaurant, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a memorable
celebration at home. As they say, home is wherever mom is!

With the vaccine well underway for both adults and kids, things are slowly getting
back to normal. Nevertheless, it is still important to remain vigilant and take all the
necessary steps to protect ourselves from the coronavirus infection.
Taking care of ourselves, our families, work-life, and household responsibilities has
become a priority, and it is no easy feat to manage them together. In this new
normal, children are staying at home most of the day while more parents are
choosing to work from home. Thus, parenting is at its peak for most of us now.
Ensure you are on top of all your child’s health and strictly adhere to the authorities’
health guidelines, especially when you have infants in your care. Teach your children
about wearing a mask and make it a habit before going out.
For moms-to-be, being pregnant at this time means taking extra precautionary
measures to ensure you and your baby are healthy. Apart from good physical health,
your mental well-being is important too. Stay away from negative news about the
pandemic and surround yourself with positive vibes for a healthy pregnancy.
What we are going through is something no one really thought would happen.
Regardless, let’s continue to fight against this contagious disease and give our family
a healthy, happy home!

Without a doubt, we have all walked away from the near past wiser and more
learned than ever, with life lessons only actual experiences could teach us. New
parents have learned to adapt fast to the changes in lifestyle required of them, while
pregnant moms persevered with unique challenges that hardly ever existed before.
Most importantly is the way we have all made it past a challenging year, once again,
looking forward with renewed hope to better things that the future holds. We at
BabyTalk intend to stay by your side throughout this year and many more to come,
to offer you the latest information on fertility, pregnancy and parenthood. We hope
to assist you and well, be a silent friend and a messenger from the various

issue of BabyTalk, your top mother and baby monthly magazine has been
accompanying pregnant and new parents in their wonderful new journey since

What a year it has been, and if you are a new parent, or are currently expecting a child,
our hats off to you for having successfully made it to year’s end with your head held
high despite the challenges the year has thrown at us all. Travel restrictions, isolation,
job issues, health concerns, family matters, etc. Just take a second to think back at all
that you have successfully dealt with, and please, give yourself a pat on the back, for
you deserve it and more!

For the past decade, we at BabyTalk have had the pleasure of accompanying parents
and parents-to-be such as yourself throughout their pregnancy journey as well as their
journey into parenthood, offering them timely advice, info and messages from experts
month after month - and we simply love it! And, just so you know, we do not intend
to slow down - so do look out for new columns and even more goodies coming up
next year! For now, to close off our year, we have an assortment of articles which we
hope you’ll find useful, including one on internet safety for kids, as well as clever,
realistic ways to shape up after childbirth!

Pandemic or no pandemic, parents will never cease to want to give the best to their
families. However, during such uncertain times, we can never tell what’s going to
happen in terms of our health and that of our family’s. Assuming you’ve had all your
vaccine shots, I suppose it would have gotten a wee bit easier to move around, but not
without caution, am I right? And, it does not even conclude that we have nothing to
worry about. Now, more than ever, as parents, we need to be extra careful, for our
families and for ourselves.

We at BabyTalk continue to provide the relevant articles and information in hopes to
equip you for possible current inquiries you may have, and for whatever the future holds.
One main feature this month is on postpartum recovery during the pandemic. If you are
a new mom, we hope you’ll find this useful. Our guide this month is also something that
you may find timely, especially if you are a new mom. We also feature an expert’s take
on an age-old skin issue, namely, eczema, and here’s hoping we can shed some light on
this exasperating skin problem that plagues thousands of children in Malaysia. We also
have a chance to look into a fast-raising issue among children of all ages, which is,
computer vision syndrome. With kids staying home a lot these days and having to spend
so many hours in front of their computer or tablet screens to learn, complete their
homework, attend online classes, etc, parents need to be vigilant of the ramifications of

Each year from 2011, BabyTalk gives out its prestigious Readers’ Choice Awards to
deserving brands, and year by year, the event has garnered recognition and increased
participation. Needless to say, we are proud to be the presenter of this well-loved event
and we look forward to many more years of celebrating it with you, our readers!

On another note, the pandemic is still rearing its ugly head, and at the time of writing
this, the number of new cases recorded is 13,034. Most of us are working from home,
rarely go out, and shop online whenever possible. But, no matter what the year,
month, week or day brings us, one thing is for sure; we’ll not stop giving our best to
our readers. For those who have just picked up their very first issue of BabyTalk, we are
a monthly publication focussing on pregnancy, baby and parenting topics. The

First and foremost, we at BabyTalk would like to wish you all a very happy Mother’s
Day this month, and we hope you’ll have a grand time with your loved one, even if it’s
celebrated at home!

Motherhood has always been about sacrifices, as every loving, giving mom will testify. I
am a mother, and not a single day, or hour goes by without me thinking about my
offspring, always wanting the best for them. Everything a mother does for her child is
borne of love, for it is a fact that a mother only knows how to love her children first
before anyone else.

Here at BabyTalk, we’ve always been about mommies (and daddies too, so watch out
for our Father’s Day issue next month!). We’re all about pregnancy health and
wellbeing, postnatal care, as well as baby and toddler care. There is nothing about
motherhood that we don’t love and we have been at the forefront in accompanying
mothers from all walks of life throughout their journey into parenthood, right from the
delicate conception period! Covid-19 has not and will never dampen our spirits to
carry one helping our beloved readers to traverse through the thicks and thins of
parenthood. Hence, you can count on us to be there with you, all the way!

We have quite the treat for you all this month, plus some more. If this is your very first
copy of BabyTalk, welcome aboard! There are loads to read about, new things to learn,
and sometimes, old tips to be revived. Have fun, Mama, and stay safe always!

As time passes slowly (or quickly, depending on your situation in life, I suppose), parents
everywhere seemed to have somehow developed all sorts of coping mechanisms needed to
lift themselves out of this current state of restricted movements, lack of activities for their
kids, and boredom among their household. We cannot deny that at times, there is
tremendous pressure placed upon parents to keep up with the now in terms of education,
especially. What used to be largely and mainly duties carried out by teachers at school,
preschools and kindergarten are now the responsibilities of parents, and some had
absolutely no idea where to even begin! From this aspect alone, countless Malaysian parents
had to become learners themselves, delving into unknown territories of internet savviness
(for some), and taking the lead role of teaching school subjects that they thought they’d
never had to get into again. While some may have taken to this like ballerinas to their tutus,
others may have been exasperated at this whole development, and probably still are. If
you’re one of the latter, this issue may turn out to be a life-saviour - turn to our Early
Education & Development column and find out why!

It’s been a whole year since our country had its first lockdown - some among us may
remember the incident as if it was yesterday. While many things have and are still
changing around us, what with the implementation of MCO, CMCO as well as RMCO
in the different states, parents for one may be still contending with adjusting to a

ones. It’s one thing to be a parent, but to be cooped up at home in the constant
