Welcome to the year-end issue of Industry Leaders! While we were putting together this issue, we were thinking of ways in which readers could get a glimpse of the lives of entrepreneurs who’ve made it in recent years. Our Cover Story, “Entrepreneurs Under 30” celebrates savvy entrepreneurs who have been breaking the barriers of starting up a business in North America.

In Green Revolution, we celebrate the success of Hanna Hennig, CIO at Siemens AG,  who has successfully managed to lead sustainable business transformation.

Resilience, recovery and renewal – the three words that continued to help us wade through the Covid-19 crisis much of last year. This recovery comes with a renewed set of challenges for business leaders and teams. It demands profound resilience in the way we lead. What seems crystal clear from this herculean task is that a sense of purpose to live, learn and lead is needed more than ever. The coronavirus crisis has shown us how this is not the time to default to a strategy of ‘less risk, more reward’ when considering the speed at which one may expect turnover to recover. The world lost an artistic genius on May 16th. I.M. Pei, the mind behind the iconic glass pyramid outside the Louvre in Paris, died at age 102. He was considered as one of the greatest modern architectures. Young Guns features a candid conversation with two distinguished architects of our time who helped us better understand sustainable architecture. 

Sustainability is the buzz word these days and very rightly so. Crowdfunding and Green Revolution will introduce you to a visionary green startup and Germany’s predicament pertaining to its energy policies. Corporate responsibilities are now far beyond responses to regulation-induced business dynamics. In other words, innovation must not only be inspired by already existing limitations in an ecosystem or restricted to circumvent regulatory penalties. By the way, most groundbreaking business ideas require new approvals, with some of them forcing governments into adopting new or readjusting their business laws. However, ultimate ideas do address even imminent challenges as seen today; many entrepreneurs/companies are going green with no compulsion. 

After a new year comes and goes, every business executive has the future on their mind. Ambitious sales projects, marketing campaigns, and other business activities are among the top priorities as they launch into 2019. But, the question is: how likely is their industry to be disrupted? One can only answer when they think about major industry shifts and new innovations that will significantly impact the way their business operates in the year ahead.

Companies tend to be cautious capital reallocators. They put more of their resources towards the same activities each year, even though evolving strategies tend to deliver better business results – particularly during volatile times. One of the things we noticed when we looked at the top ten CFOs of the world is their extraordinary ability to forge better links between resource allocation and strategy. They understand one thing: the best way to help their companies is to spend more time on strategy development. In the case of one of the world’s largest beverage company, the CFO set up a council to discuss growth opportunities, strategic issues, and M&A strategy. Together, the council was able to aggressively challenge the status-quo attributed to running the corporation and set aside a defined amount for surmounting business needs. This was a result of the foresight and trusted collaboration of the CFO and their teams. What we’ve heard from these CFOs is an attitude of “plough through, complex problems.” Say “yes” to greater opportunities – ready or not.

Business decision makers have always had to juggle between two contradictory goals: making their brands distinctive while at the same time making them central in their industry. Google in search engine and Tesla in electric cars, come to mind when we think of brands that maintain centrality and distinctiveness. These companies stand out from the crowd and avoid direct competition with widely popular companies because they excel in terms of consumer preferences, pricing, and the direction of innovation. Traditionally, decision makers have analyzed brand positioning and business performance as two separate yard sticks to measure growth rate, market share, and profitability. 

Bill Gates’ approach is emblematic of a growing trend of impact-focused investors that are emerging from all corners of the world. Between 2010 and 2017, emerging markets and developing economies have witnessed an increase in the number of young world leaders actively engaging in philanthropy. Today’s young business leaders are acting more like investors in philanthropic initiatives than traditional philanthropists. These leaders are closely connected to their communities’ problems, and are making smart, data-driven investments in both socially-driven initiatives and nonprofits. In some ways, they resemble Wall Street venture capitalists. New world philanthropists are using their wealth in very specific ways to their impact-driven business plans; in a similar way they did in the world of business. As capital is created, more philanthropists are emerging, dedicated to promoting impact-driven initiatives in their communities – and they are poised to continue to do so in coming years.

On the Wall Street, ‘money talks’. Many believe hedge funders have had a horrible year, but that can’t be true. From banking to buyouts, movers and shakers in the world of finance have tried to bring balance in what happens to be a very tumultuous year. These hedge fund managers, lenders and private equity moguls are a far more vocal and influential group than any other on the planet. They do not just control people or resources, but are a potent combination of money and influences that is much needed to shape the world. They control trillions of dollars around the global economy, which impacts about all of us in one way or another. The true outliers make day-to-day decisions that affect millions, shake industries and change economic power. Industry Leaders Magazine has compiled a list of top leaders in finance industry – billionaires, CEOs, and heads of state. The most prestigious B schools in the world obsessively pursue money. This ideological underpinning has led to the arsenal of junk-bond-induced takeovers of the 1980s; the corporate accounting scandals of the 2000s; the outrageous increase in the pay gap between chief executives and workers; and even the real estate crash and the 2008 financial crisis. Just about every premise of this teaching model that dominates B schools’ curriculum needs to be punctured; and the sooner the better, before much damage is done. Business graduates focus far too much on maximizing shareholder value and have a limited understanding of ethical and social considerations essential to the core of business leadership. B Schools need to gain a rebalance so business graduates devote overwhelmingly on not just the financial aspects of the business, but also on ‘prudence’. This requires an education in moral reasoning. Do we have time for that?



This is a challenging time to a business leader. Around the globe, the economic roller coaster is far from over. The political uncertainty has taken a toll on long-term business planning. Back in the United States, shareholder activists have become powerful critics of business leaders. It’s a tough time to be a C.E.O in particular, which explains the 2015 turnover among global C.E.O.s, which reached a record high of nearly 17 percent. 
Against this backdrop, it’s heartening to see a group of high-performing C.E.O.s. This year, we have ‘Most Unsung Iconic C.E.O.s of All Times,’ a great illustration of the many ‘unsung’ business leaders who have successfully steered the company through adverse times. Happy reading!

Innovation comes from cold-eyes analysis of existing problems. More often, it comes from an unexpected failure, and yet businesses dismiss them, and even resent them. In the time it could take a company to get that much-awaited bump in total valuation, which can at least take 6-12 months, rival companies are out there focusing and executing on expanding their business, of course, with the capital to carry out the same. A company, meanwhile, spends countless of hours while fulfilling data requests and attending meetings with potential investors. Companies seeking for funds are starving of cash that they require for growth, especially at the juncture in the timespan, which is most critical to the growth. Well, so much of fishing is not a great outcome.

History shows businesses that don’t take advantage of the growing prevalence and constancy of trends end up on the path of complacency. The future won’t build itself, and that is the harsh reality.

Today, businesses are observing that the capabilities of cloud computing continue to expand exponentially. A global survey of nearly 1,500 businesses and technology leaders noted that the majority - 85% - said their organizations will be using “cloud tools moderately to extensively over the next three years”. Topping the list of accelerants is supply chain management.
