You have the power to prevent your puppy from contracting debilitating or deadly diseases
Health in your hands

Some serious canine diseases can be deadly – but they can also be preventable, provided you have your puppy correctly vaccinated, and continue with booster vaccines throughout your pet's life, where indicated. See page 56 for more information on vaccinations.

What is rabies?

Rabies is a deadly viral disease which affects the central nervous system. The rabies virus is spread through saliva, after a bite or scratch by an infected animal. There are two clinical forms of rabies – an aggressive form (high aggression and biting, among other things) and a ‘dumb’ form (weakness, loss of coordination and even paralysis). The disease occurs in all nine provinces in South Africa and, once symptoms develop, it is almost always fatal.

Prevention

As a pet owner, you are legally required to have your dog vaccinated against rabies. Repeat rabies vaccinations were required every three years in the past, but most vets now advocate a yearly rabies vaccination. Ask your vet for advice, based on your area.
