CHARLES CHAFER served as master of the Derwent for 30 years, the first 28 of those from 1946 to 1974 as sole master and huntsman. His father, a chemist and founder of JW Chafer Ltd, went on a long cruise when Charles was 17 and left him in charge of his thriving Doncaster chemical company. As chairman Charles grew the company into a huge agri-chemical business, pioneering new techniques for the use of liquid fertiliser.
Charles was involved with motor torpedo boats patrolling the Channel during the war, notably on D Day at Omaha Beach. He was wounded and then became involved with the veterinary corps, rehabilitating horses, particularly with the Badsworth where his great friend Colin MacAndrew was hunting the hounds.
