UNLESS you are lucky enough to have a weighbridge nearby, it can be quite tricky working out the exact weight of a horse. Some 16hh hunters are more heavily built than others — just like us riders.
Consequently, when it comes to choosing a car to tow your horses, it is always best to err on the side of caution and ensure the car you are using is fully up to the job — and a bit more.
GO AND STOP
WHEN car manufacturers design a new model, they will have taken two important details into account. First, that the engine is sufficiently powerful not only to propel the car, but also safely tow whatever weight they recommend. Secondly, if the car is carrying and towing its maximum weight, are the brakes good enough to stop it? The designers will make sure that the bigger the engine, the more powerful the brakes.

I’ve hunted all my life. Growing up, I hunted with the Cotswold and VWH and I’m lucky to have been out with lots of packs, from the Teme Valley in Wales where I learnt the name of almost every hound, to days out with the Beaufort with a field of 200-plus. My greatest moments have been following my best friends over Ledbury hedges. Eventually, I focused on eventing – I did juniors and under-21s. Then I got a four-year-old, Bertie, and took him up to what would be four-star today.
