Supriya Thakkar is an Architect by profession and is associated with ISDI Parsons as a faculty in the department of Interior Design. She enjoys traveling and has a keen interest in arts, history, society and culture. Being exposed to visual art at an early age, she tries to associate patterns, textures, colours with places, things and people on a daily basis and tries to draw a parallel between basic elements of design with the elements of nature and the community.
If the expression ‘’good things come in small packages’’ was attributed to a place, Sikkim would aptly metaphor the idea. But unlike its size, the small place is host to magnanimous entities. The landlocked region, also the second smallest state in the country, is nestled within the mighty Himalayas bordered by China, Bhutan and Nepal. Each country bestows Sikkim a slice of their culture resulting in rich traditions, an amalgamation of different religions, dialects, communities and ethnicities, while the Himalayas endow their flora and fauna.
In a state as multifold and culturally vivid as Sikkim, colour is perhaps a common thread that binds together the myriad lifestyles, people, traditions and outlooks. Sikkim is heavily influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. And colour has been a significant element of the Buddhist consciousness.
