Vinay (Vin) Ganapathy draws inspiration from his friends and the dynamic city he lives in for his distinctive illustrations.
Inspired by comics
I moved to the U.S. with my parents when I was five. Doodling and sketching have been my passions since I was little. I discovered comics when I was nine years old and thought I could eventually draw like that if I kept drawing something every day. I don’t have any interests other than drawing. I went to Syracuse University to pursue a BFA degree, not knowing what to major in. Since I enjoyed painting in my youth, I thought I’d be a painting major. I decided mid-semester to become an illustrator as it seemed a more efficient way to learn the business side of the process as well as to solve visual problems.
The making of an illustrator
Illustration is the only thing I know how to do! The human figure inspires me. My style is figurative. Others have described my style as sharing a similar spirit to Egon Schiele. I like drawing figures and hope to convey stories/ emotions through figures. My favorite medium is ink brush pens on sketchbooks.
