Step 1:
After sketching out the main outline, I started with the eye using a combination of black, dark sepia, walnut brown and terracotta, building up the layers with a very gentle touch so as not to fill the tooth too quickly. If you do run out of tooth before getting dark enough, just turn the film over and apply colour to the back in the same area.
Step 2 and Step 3:
Here is an example of the initial layers for the fur under the eye, using burnt umbra for an initial layer of hairs.
Step 4 and Step 5:
Now I apply a light layer of terracotta as the base layer, then after a few more hairs with the burnt umbra I use the slice ceramic craft knife to ‘erase’ highlight hairs. This process is repeated (more hairs and more erasing) to get more depth.
Step 6:
This is the same process for the hairs above the eye but using the Tombo Mono to achieve a softer look. If I had used the craft knife here the hairs would look too harsh and I was looking for a slightly softer feel.
