PRETTY MUCH MISSING FROM A BUSTLING segment, devoid of a modern offering, Maruti Suzuki seem to have waited, watched, and learned. Now they've stormed into the arena which was created by the Renault Duster and then dominated by the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos with the Nissan Kicks, Volkswagen Taigun, Škoda Kushaq, and MG Astor stepping into battle as well. The new breed of mid-SUVs were mostly crossovers post the Duster AWD moving out, until now.
The Grand Vitara comes in guns blazing. Two-wheel-drive manual, automatic, manual all-wheel drive, as well as a full hybrid, developed together with Toyota. The all-new mid-size SUV is built on the global C-platform which also underpins the new Brezza.
Here, the wheelbase has been extended to 2,600 millimetres, similar to the old S-Cross', but the new Grand Vitara is longer, measuring 4.345 mm from nose to tail, 1,795 mm wide, and 1,645 mm tall. It also gets over 200 mm of ground clearance. The styling is bold and eye-catching, with a huge grille and chrome surround, piercing LED light arrays integrated with daytime lights and turn-indicators, projector headlamps below, and a sweeping bar LED tail-light cluster and "Grand Vitara" badging in chrome. The wheels are 17inch dual-tone alloys with 215/60 rubber and all-disc brakes.
