“Not a proper Jaguar” is what the purists will say. Built under Ford ownership and representing excellent value for money, it’s still an excellent car to own.
Not a proper Jaguar”; let’s getthis out of the way first andforemost. While the X-Type was built under Ford ownership and is essentially a Ford Mondeo with a different body and badges, the Jag is still a very good car and (in my opinion) it has the looks to put not just the Mondeo to bed, but also the Rover 75. The X-Type was arguably built out of necessity, but that didn’t do much to halt its position in the compact market. Although it shares its platform with the Mondeo, it’s no bad point. After all, platform sharing did no harm for the Jaguar XK8 and Aston Martin DB7 under Ford ownership…
Next up: “other Jags do the Jag part much better than the X-Type.” That may be (only partly) true in terms of luxury, but not in terms of drive. The X-Type drives very well for an entry-level car. We must not forget that that’s exactly what the X-Type is; an entry-level model into the compact market, arguably paving the way for Jaguar (under new ownership) to introduce the XE.
