The legendary VW ‘Bus’ is unrivalled when it comes to mixing classic appeal with practicality – it’s the only choice as far as I’m concerned.
I’by admitting lay my cards on the table by admitting I have a bit of a soft spot for the Citroën H Van. I live in France, for goodness sake, and despite looking like a corrugated garden shed, it’s brilliant for trundling along to a local Vide Grenier or retro Manifestation. But to be honest, in my mind that’s where its usefulness (and therefore the extent of my adoration) ends. Especially when I’m asked to consider it in the same breath as the legendary and now totally iconic Volkswagen ‘Bus’.
The Type 2 shared the same ethos as the Type 1 Beetle: It was developed with durability in mind and engineered so it could be driven comfortably at maximum cruising speed all day without breaking down, which is precisely why it proved so successful and why it was adopted for so many different uses. Commercial buyers picked up the pick-ups and panel vans, while families bought the combis and campers.
