The Indian transportation industry, currently valued at USD 160 million, forms the backbone of the distribution and delivery network in the country. The intracity logistics and transportation segment particularly plays an indispensable role in catering to daily demands within the city thus ensuring a consistent supply of essential goods and services. Following the onset of the Covid19 pandemic, intra-city transportation has gained renewed emphasis, with the rise of e-commerce and pressing demand for contactless services and doorstep deliveries. With restored supply chain networks and sustained demand from agricultural and e-commerce sectors, the Indian transportation industry at large is expected to grow at a Compound Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10 per cent, with intra-city transportation and delivery playing a critical role.
One major player within the intra-city logistics business that has sustained its significance over the years is Swayambhu Transport. Based in Pune, the company has persisted within the business for nearly two decades, playing an instrumental role in revolutionising the garbage collection transportation system in cantonment areas.
Its first stint in the garbage collection business was in 2008—a government contract with the Khadki Cantonment board on a trial basis. Today, Swayambhu Transport operates in all cantonment boards in Pune, and caters to contracts across Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, generating an annual turnover of Rs.58 crore in FY2020.
