1963 Ford F100 AVO F100

This whole build started based on a request from my son.

1963 Ford F100 AVO F100

He wanted to restore/build something. He had a Ford Escort Mk1 2 door in mind but after searching for a while, we actually gave-up due to overpriced rundown projects that were available. Then one day I saw an ad for a 1963 Ford F100 from a local seller and we went to have a look and soon afterwards it arrived at our home.

We spent the next few months eating, sleeping, working and going to school, whilst building the truck. We showed total commitment by working on the vehicle every spare hour. We gave up holidays and weekends to complete the truck for my son’s matric year. We learnt new skills like metal work, panel beating, auto electrical and upholstery whilst still keeping to a deadline. A whole new set of tools had to be purchased as the usual DIY ones would not do.

We decided that we wanted to do a resto-mod by keeping the outside and interior close to original and install a new-age power plant under the hood. I know lots of people will frown upon our choice of engine but taking into consideration cost, fuel economy and the availability of spares, we opted to use a Lexus 1 UZFE because we wanted something that could be used as a daily driver. This was because we did not want a show piece or a white elephant standing in the garage. We opted to replace the old suspension with one from a XJ6 to lower the truck and improve road holding and braking. Our inspiration for the paint came from an American tv show. We decide on a look with some patina rather than a show quality paint job.
