Scott Lambert talks to International Harvester Club of Great Britain committee member Andrew Carpenter about his latest project.
Isn’t it funny how a chance conversation can often lead to you meeting someone that lives locally that you didn’t know? That’s exactly what happened when the International Harvester Club of Great Britain’s Chairman, Geoff Harrison, pointed out Andrew Carpenter to me at a show.
“You must know Andrew,” Geoff said. “He lives near you!” The truth is that although the name was familiar, I had never met Andrew – but we both knew several of the same enthusiasts and it was probably only by chance that we hadn’t met before.
As is generally the case, the conversation between Andrew and I quickly turned to what was in our respective collections and it transpired that we were both owners of International-Huard reversible ploughs. These ploughs were once a relatively common sight in Britain, appearing in several guises – Huard, International Harvester, Massey Ferguson and Salopian-Kenneth Hudson Ltd. – better known as SKH – to name a few.
Andrew already owned several two furrow IH-Huard 1-27 examples, but told me that he wanted to find a three furrow 1-37 or 1-38 model to suit his McCormick IH 523 tractor. My brother and I had similar thoughts some years before – wanting to team a three furrow reversible with either our 523 or 634 tractors, as per IH promotional literature of the period.
We had managed to pick up an IHHuard two-furrow reversible locally for a good price, but our hunt for a three-furrow model had drawn a blank until 2008, when little brother chanced upon a 1-37 in ‘the graveyard’ of unsold lots at Cheffins’ Sutton sale ground after one of the company’s monthly machinery sales.
