Unique Fowler

Unique Fowler

It was great to talk to the very talented John Colwill in November last year. I have known John for a long time and both he and his wife enjoy ploughing – but it’s John’s love of Fowler crawlers – particularly the pre-Thomas Ward Marshall/Fowler Group era – that is the focus of this section.

These crawlers are an acquired taste, but they are part of British history. Robert Crawford, who holds the Fowler crawler record, is also enthusiastic about them – with his father having sold these interesting machines during working times.

The existence of a post-WW2 Fowler FD4 crawler had been known for years, standing in a shed just outside Wisbech at White Hall Farm. It is thought that this tractor, now owned by John Colwill, is the only example left in Britain and dates from 1946.
