Out with the old
Volks World|April 2017

In a bizarre twist, James swaps a shiny ’60 for a patinated ’66. Yep, there’s nowt as queer as folk

Out with the old

What can I say, except the heart wants what the heart wants? I wasn’t even looking for another car, truth be told, but I had decided it was time to move the ’60 on. I was planning to drive it to the Freddy Files in Ninove and the VolksWorld Show and stick a big ‘for sale’ sign in the window. But fate played a hand and now arguably the best, most original and loveliest old Beetle I’ve ever owned, belongs to someone else. Pardon me whilst I spill the beans.

It’s a stupid state of affairs, but I currently own more cars than is actually good for me, which is why I’ve decided to sell a few. I’d bought the ’60 because it came along at the right time and was always a model I’d lusted after. I also believe everyone should have a Beetle tucked away in their garage somewhere at all times, and being the editor of VolksWorld at the time, I thought I should have one I could write about in the project pages. And, to that end, it did its job. The thing is, I’ve never really clicked with that car. I don’t know why, but I always knew it wasn’t a keeper and that I shouldn’t get too attached to it. So I didn’t.

I decided a little while ago, that I would sell it, pop the money in the bank and have one less car to worry about.
