Of course for an owner of a working bus, as well as providing a bit of an income, there is the added bonus of having it to use for weekends, shows and holidays, provided of course it’s not already booked!
Neil Winter has been around VW buses since his early days when he used to travel around with his Grandad and his 1972 Westfalia. Many years later, after a holiday in Cornwall in a hired T3, and then seeing a stunning Split used as Bride Transport at a friend’s wedding, the idea of Gecko Campers was conceived and Neil recalls, “Not long after that I drafted up a small business plan and Gecko Campers was born, we then went on to buy Gecko to hire out for weddings and for us to enjoy sociably.” Gecko is a 1972 crossover model, finished in Neptune Blue and originally converted by Dormobile. Neil tells us, “With the help of Rog Warren & Tony Bridge from VW Camper & Classic Repairs in Wiltshire, we found a solid project camper for them to restore, they came across a T2 camper that was sitting in the back of a barn on a farm in Minehead and after a thorough inspection they called me to say that they were confident they had found our future camper. Amazingly they told me it had jump-started straight away after being sat covered up for 2 years. I loved the colour and he had a sad and lost look about him so we made the owner an offer which he accepted and not long after that he was trailered off to Rog & Tony’s workshop to start his restoration journey.”

Lance & Lisa Beaver tell the story of their...‘Old School' Westfalia Bay
The history of our bus is varied. I heard that it used to belong to a soccer player who lived in it for a while, and a tale of a cross country trip that was taken in it. Since we’ve owned it, we have been to numerous car shows with our car club Kahiko Kula and enjoy that immensely, but taking it camping is our joy.
Messing About in Boats
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing — absolutely nothing — half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.”

We’d wanted a splitscreen bus for years. And first got the bug, after hiring one for a holiday in Cornwall in 2009.
