Surfing on your preferred side (facing the wave) or front side is of course the natural side, all surfers in their right mind will want to surf this way, but every beach generally will have some nice backside waves to surf too. So, rather than ignoring them pluck up some courage and learn to ride them, you’ll soon realize that everything is a bit trickier than on your natural side and you’ll need to pick up some new techniques, but stick with it as learning anything new is always more rewarding the more difficult it is. Besides, once you’ve grasped the basics you’ll soon find something even more complicated to do.

This issue we’re breaking down the backside turn from your first turn to pushing the move harder with more commitment and hitting the section with more speed and connection. Our rider Blue Ewer is riding a 7’2 x 25” board but anything around 9’ or smaller will work, although a heavier person on a 9’5” should be able to achieve good results.
1. Before you initiate the turn, you’ll need to switch your paddle over to the other side of the board by changing your hand position. This will set you up ready to plant the blade into the inside of the turn. You should be looking forward into the turn, weighting your back foot and leaning into it; the further back you have your foot on the board the better the response from the board.

At this time of year, the rate of infection for colds and flu normally tends to slow down as we enter warmer, springtime months. However, if you’ve been anywhere at all in the world recently, then there’s one word you can’t escape at the moment: Coronavirus. Infection rates, mortality rates and prognostic data are changing daily at the moment. As a new virus none of us have previously been exposed to it, meaning that currently, we have no immunity to it. It’s only through being infected by a virus that our bodies are able to make the right antibodies to not only enable us to recover but to also help protect us from any recurrent and future infection from it. If you’re keen to stay well and keep getting out on your SUP board this spring, then focussing on boosting your immune system is a positive step to take.

Desire Lines
We were on the outskirts of Helsinki, scouting a new destination for our sup camps. Just 45 minutes’ drive from the city, the untouched nature of the Nuuksio National Park stretched out before us. Mirror-smooth lakes, wild herbs and an impressive fauna waiting to be explored over on board or on foot via the many desire lines made by the land mammals.

She participated in her first international event, the Gla Gla, 2020, and placed 1st Brit, 8th lady and 81st overall, out of a mass start of 637 paddlers.
