I always thought windsurfing gave me an advantage in geography at school. In my early years I already knew the significance of low pressures and trade wind zones, but it was the far-flung corners of the world that a fellow ‘windie’ hailed from or had ventured to in the name of exploration or competition that really piqued my interest. The world broadened and came alive beyond my school books as I learnt more about countries and nationalities from magazines and videos. The ‘search’ for wind, fresh experiences and destinations is integral to our sport and we pay homage in this issue with writings from some of those most committed to the art.
We kick off with the enigmatic and prodigiously talented Frenchman, Thomas Traversa, who recounts his recent travels to the desert waves of Namibia, charting not only his journey to these now famously long and hollow waves of the ‘Skeleton Coast’, but reflects further on our sport’s relationship with travel – “A bit like migratory birds, we gather according to the seasons in different parts of the planet, to which we like to return regularly to enjoy the good conditions.”
