A Misplaced Attitude Towards CSR

Persistent rainfall for three days had transformed the brown velvet into green in the interiors of Sangareddy District, Telangana that I was travelling through with my colleagues. We were visiting some of the Anganwadi Centres (Early Childhood Centres) that we are working with. The roads were narrow but of good quality, looked recently asphalted with white lines painted on the boarders.

The green cover along the road was punctuated by large buildings on both sides of the roads that looked like factories. My colleagues informed me that some of them were pharmaceutical factories, some chemical industries, and a few breweries - manufacturing beer of reputed brands. Somehow, the land around them either looked barren, brown or less green, and, stood out like a sore thumb. Subsequent discussions brought home the fact that the effluent water, other waste and gases dumped by some of those factories had rendered the land around them fairly unusable. In addition, the bore wells and agricultural land too had gotten adversely affected. The gases emitted were affecting people, causing them respiratory problems. It reminded me of Bellandur Lake and Varthur Lake back at my home town Bengaluru, regularly foaming and occasionally catching fire due to the hazardous chemicals released from the factories around the lakes. The authorities in Bengaluru were aware of all the factories releasing such substances in the lakes, and yet, the bureaucrats were taking no stern action against these criminal industrialists.
