National Recycling Policy May Be Unveiled Shortly

The National Recycling Policy, which will focus not just on metal scrap but other materials too, is expected to be unveiled shortly, over the next one and a half months, it is learnt. Niti Aayog, which is helming the same, has been busy gathering stakeholder views. Working towards this end, and in order to complement the policy development exercise and obtain inputs from stakeholders in the recycling industry,

NITI Aayog and the Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) jointly hosted an international conference on “Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling: Policy Prescriptions” on August 6, 2018 in New Delhi.

The conference highlighted the immediate recommendations that need to be incorporated in the proposed policy paper. It was observed that an inverted tax structure is to avoided, tax rationalisation needs to be undertaken, that setting up of recycling parks needs to be facilitated and the feasibility of preferential market access of recycled materials needs to reviewed.

“We are awaiting the National Recycling Policy on which we had been working with Niti Aayog. This policy could be unveiled in another one and a half months,” Sanjay Mehta, President, Material Recycling Association of India (MRAI) informed Steel Insights.

The conference was attended by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation in the Government of India; Amitabh Kant, the CEO of NITI Aayog; and Rajiv Kumar, the Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog amongst others. While addressing the gathering, Gadkari emphasised that waste management has huge economic potential in India and waste-to- wealth is the need of the hour.
