Beware, body-shamers — call someone fat and you may be the one getting shamed instead. Just ask the Playboy model who fat-shamed a naked woman at her gym. Or RUI EN, who, after putting on 7kg for a role and getting flak for looking heavier, tells us it’s time to “open a dialogue” in Singapore about body-shaming. Is 2016 the year we banish fat-shaming and accept that people come in all shapes and sizes?
If you gawked at the recent bikini pictures of Jennifer Aniston on holiday with hubby Justin Theroux in the Bahamas that were splashed all over the tabloids and on the Internet and thought, “Wah, tummy so big, must be pregnant right?”, well, Jen is not pleased with you. The 47-year-old actress is Fed Up with a capital F and U about the pregnancy rumours that have plagued her since, well, forever and wrote a huffy piece on The Huffington Post website about how she’s had it with the “sport-like scrutiny and body-shaming that occurs daily under the guise of ‘journalism,’ the ‘First Amendment’ and ‘celebrity news’” and how the “objectification and scrutiny we put women through is absurd and disturbing”. Basically, she’s upset that people obsess over her weight, and that the result of “a big lunch” on a beach holiday caused the pregnancy rumour mill to go into overdrive — again (“Jen and Justin’s miracle child!” “The couple are ecstatic!”). The fact that some people may be genuinely happy and excited for America’s Sweetheart to finally fulfill her wish of being a mother (and thus are not actually body-shaming her) aside, Jen’s point is that it is Not Okay to judge a woman based on her body (and that it’s her prerogative to have a food baby if she wants to, without being called pregnant).
